(Development) Band 5 / Annex T – Salary Range £25,100 - £31,649 per annum

Plus Distant Islands Allowance of £1,895 per annum and Relocation assistance of up to £8,000


The Gilbert Bain Hospital is based in Shetland’s main town of Lerwick and provides general medical, surgical, critical care, rehabilitation and maternity inpatient services to a population of approximately 22,000.  The hospital also has an extensive outpatient department which is supported by Visiting Specialist Consultants, A&E facilities and is the base for the majority of Allied Health Professionals.


The Theatre department has 1 post available and is currently looking for a practitioner who has skills and experience in both anaesthetics/recovery and preferably critical care, to come and join the team. As a small theatre team we pride ourselves in providing patient care of the highest standards and are looking for someone who is motivated and passionate.


Applications for the Band 6 post: requires the candidate to be a Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner currently practicing in anaesthetics. You will have extensive experience in Theatres and have completed a nationally recognised qualification in anaesthetic assistance or the NES Core Competencies for Anaesthetic Assistants. You will be able to demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning and the acquisition of new skills for this varied role.


Applications for the Band 5 Developmental post: requires the candidate to be a Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner with current or recent acute/critical care experience. Previous experience of working in a Remote and Rural, or island setting would be desirable.

As a developmental post, the candidate will be supported to complete the NES Core Competencies for Anaesthetic Assistants as part of their training and development for a period of 12 months before progression into the Band 6 post.


As a member of a remote and rural anaesthetic team this post includes a contribution to neonatal and paediatric care, and experience in these areas would also be desirable.


You will enjoy working in partnership with the multidisciplinary team, participating in anaesthetic/recovery duties.

The post holder will be able to manage all aspects of patient care in the theatre suite; they will assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care for patients undergoing theatre procedures in varied specialties. In this role you will be required to contribute to the development of the service and provide education and training to the theatre nursing team. 

Extended role developments, together with good communication and team working skills are also essential.


The anaesthetic nursing team also provides support for emergency critical care in other areas of the hospital including A&E and Maternity. 

There is an on-call commitment for which an allowance is payable.
