Edinburgh Hospices - Marie Curie and St Columba’s
Advanced Pharmacist – Palliative Care
Band 8a 1.0WTE
Due to retirement in 2021 a rare opportunity has arisen for an advanced clinical pharmacist to provide palliative care services to the Edinburgh Hospices – both Marie Curie and St Columba’s. The post-holder will be a key member of the palliative care multi-disciplinary team (MDT) within both hospices, providing clinical pharmacy services to palliative care patients & leadership in medicines governance, and working closely with them to maintain and improve patient services.
Specific responsibilities include:
- To lead, plan, develop and provide highly specialist near patient pharmaceutical care to palliative care patients
- To provide leadership for the safe and effective use of medicines in palliative care, including advice and oversight of medicines governance and practices, for the Hospice management teams
- To provide specialist advice to local primary care teams and community pharmacies providing the local palliative care network
- Liaison with community pharmacy suppliers of medicines to MCH and SCH
- To provide professional advice and education and training on medicines associated with palliative care to a range of health professionals within the hospices and across NHS Lothian
- To provide a defined link and liaise with providers of pharmaceutical palliative care in local acute settings and primary care settings and develop initiatives that support the future strategic aims of the palliative care services
- To contribute to the development, monitoring and implementation of a consistent process for the financial and clinical analysis on the cost-effective use of medicines for palliative care within area of responsibility
- Work on local and national expert groups to deliver palliative care guidelines for the safe delivery of medicines in this specialist area
- Support a culture of research and audit within cancer and palliative care pharmacy services in order to promote evidence based delivery of pharmaceutical services
Applications are invited from pharmacists with excellent communication skills and experience of delivering clinical pharmacy services. Experience of MDT working is essential. A prescribing qualification is highly desirable.
