Ophthalmology

Orthoptist- Band 5- Full-time 37.5 hours Permanent

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Orthoptist to join our team of orthoptists and orthoptic support workers working alongside the wider ophthalmology team with 4 Consultant Ophthalmologists with a specialist interest in paediatrics and 2 in adult strabismus/neuro-ophthalmology.

The post is mainly based at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion in central Edinburgh and will include sessions at St John’s Hospital in Livingston and at nursery or community settings in Lothian for delivery of the pre-school orthoptic vision screening service.

You will be involved in providing an Orthoptic service to a varied caseload of paediatric and adult motility. The orthoptic service also manages/supports and provides training for visual field technicians/orthoptic assistants at the Eye Pavilion. The department delivers orthoptic pre-school vision screening with orthoptic assistants at various sites across Lothian. A full UK driving licence for ease of travelling to outside nursery sites is recommended.

The department is a recognised clinical teaching site for undergraduate orthoptic students and is also involved in teaching to medical, nursing and optometry professional groups. There is an active mentoring programme for new graduates. The department actively participates in CPD and audit/research.

A diploma/degree in Orthoptics and HCPC registration are essential
