Applicants are invited for this full time (10PA) substantive post. This post, along with a recent expansion of the liaison multidisciplinary team, represents a commitment to maintain and develop the work of the Liaison psychiatry service in NHS Ayrshire and Arran. The post holder would work in collaboration with the other Consultant Liaison Psychiatrists to share Consultant responsibilities in clinical work, service development, clinical governance, education, and managerial aspects of the service. There are opportunities to develop specific areas of interest / expertise within liaison psychiatry. 

The NHS Ayrshire and Arran Psychiatric Liaison and Alcohol Liaison team work with the aim of enhancing the service that the patients with mental health problems experience in the General Hospitals. The team is based at University Hospital Crosshouse and primarily provides a service to Ayrshire’s two district general hospitals (University Hospitals Ayr and Crosshouse).  The service provides 7 day per week mental health input for general hospital patients presenting with self-harm, alcohol problems and A&E patients with mental health problems. In addition there are in-patient and outpatient services for patients who have both mental health and physical health components to their presentation. There is also dedicated Consultant Neuro-psychology and Consultant CBT Psychotherapy input into the team.

In NHS Ayrshire and Arran, Liaison Psychiatry Services are managed within Adult Mental Health. The post is directed to the over 16 and under 65 age group which currently numbers some 280,000 people.  There are good working links with local health psychologists, social workers, general hospital staff, and colleagues within psychiatry.

Applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained within the UK should have evidence of higher Specialist Training leading to CCT in General Adult Psychiatry or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training. Applicants should be approved under Section 22 of the Mental Health (Scotland) (Care and Treatment) Act 2003 (or be eligible to become approved).

The terms and conditions of service are those determined by the New Consultant Contract (Scotland) 2004 and are offered on a 10 Programmed Activity basis. Opportunities may exist for Extra Programmed Activities subject to service requirements.
