About this Post
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the largest Health Board in Scotland delivering acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.2 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.
Mental Health and Addiction Services are delivered through Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership acting on behalf of the Health and Social Care Partnerships within the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Board area. System-wide engagement by all Health and Social Care partnerships has enhanced the provision of “whole system” care and treatment, while also addressing the causes of poor mental health and wellbeing.
Effective system redesign in unscheduled care, psychological therapies, suicide prevention and addictions are nationally recognised. The Mental Health Strategy commissioned by the Chief Officers of the 6 Health and Social Care Partnerships within Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and in partnership with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde sets out a 5 year programme of continuing service development, including in eHealth and Mental Health in Primary Care.
A successful track record of innovation and delivery in Mental Health Services is achieved through delivery of the objectives of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership.
We are now seeking to appoint an engaging and inspiring new Deputy Medical Director - Mental Health and Addiction Services who will provide the professional leadership and expert advice to our staff, promoting a culture of continuous quality improvement and ensuring that robust systems are in place to monitor, review and improve clinical performance in line with professional standards.
We are seeking an exceptional individual who will establish and maintain credibility and influence amongst senior clinical leaders and health care policy makers across the Health and Social Care Partnerships and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. From a clinical and organisational perspective, help others understand the issues relating to Mental Health and Addiction services and the need for expertise in this area.
The post holder will be employed by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and will report to the Chief Officer of Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership and to the Medical Director, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde; working closely with both on a range of matters relating to clinical and professional practice.
This is a challenging and highly rewarding position; one which allows the post holder to influence the planning of high quality, safe, efficient and patient-centred services in compliance with local and national targets. Setting the strategic direction of Mental Health and Addiction Services will be achieved through collaborative and partnership working with the Health and Social Care’s Chief Officers along with colleagues in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s Acute and Primary Care services.
The successful candidate will demonstrate previous medical management experience within Mental Health (including CAMHS, Adult, Older Adult and Forensic Services), Substance Misuse or Learning Disability Services and currently registered, with a licence to practice in the UK, on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist or GP Register with evidence of continuing professional development, including management and leadership development.
Candidates for this role must be able to demonstrate strong influencing and leadership qualities and the ability to inspire the confidence and respect of colleagues to lead and deliver on key professional and service objectives. A strategic thinker with a high degree of integrity and excellent judgement along with strong negotiation skills and an ability to operate and influence in an often politically sensitive environment.
It is anticipated that effective delivery of this management role will require a commitment of 6 sessions per week which may include one or more SPA.
The successful appointee will be expected to maintain their licence to practice with the General Medical Council (GMC), and that will require supplementing this role with appropriate direct clinical care sessions and supporting professional activities.
A detailed job planning meeting on appointment will be agreed with the Chief Officer and Board Medical Director including determining the split between direct clinical care commitments which will be reviewed and agreed with appropriate Clinical Director.
This is a substantive appointment to a 10 session post within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, with the appointment to the Deputy Medical Director – Mental Health and Addiction Services role offered as 3 years initially, renewable subject to annual performance review.
