Band 8a £51,733 - £55,745 including Distant Islands Allowance
Full Time 37.5 hours per week

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and highly motivated sonographer to work in the Radiology department of the Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall to set up and lead the MSK and peripatetic ultrasound service.
The Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall is a Remote and Rural District General Hospital with 48 beds. There is an Acute Ward, Theatre, an A&E department incorporating a receiving ward, a High Dependency Unit, a rehabilitation unit, a day surgery unit and a maternity unit. The hospital opened in 2019 and the radiology department was completely refitted.
The Radiology department at the Balfour Hospital has two ultrasound rooms and a portable ultrasound unit. Currently the department undertakes most ultrasound examinations in the hospital and is developing a local MSK ultrasound service. We want to begin delivering ultrasound examinations in partnership with the remote GP surgeries located on the isles around the Orkney mainland.
The post holder will be working closely with partners in orthopaedics and primary care to develop the MSK ultrasound service and staff, to run and manage the service. They will also develop, in conjunction with primary care to deliver an ultrasound service to patients on the islands around the Orkney mainland.
The successful candidate will manage the imaging support workers in the department and other MSK sonographers. They will also deputise for the lead general sonographer and the Radiology Services manager in their absence.
We are fully committed to continuous professional development and have an excellent record for training radiographers in postgraduate extended practice. You will be expected to participate in the training of student radiographers, sonographers, and other health professionals. The department is looking to develop our research profile and the post holder would be expected to work on publishable articles based on the service delivery and development.
