The NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, West of Scotland Specialist Virology Centre (WOSSVC) is delivered from Level 5, New Lister Building, Glasgow Royal Infirmary The laboratories provide a full and comprehensive Virology service to the population of Greater Glasgow & Clyde, hospital based users e.g. medical, nursing, estates, pharmacy and other department staff e.g. , users in Primary Care and General Practice. The service also provides a Virology referral service to health boards in the West of Scotland and in some instances to health boards in NHS Scotland.
Specialist Biomedical Scientists (BMS) in Virology provide specialist services and are responsible for the performance of scientific procedures used for screening purposes and in the investigation and diagnosis of viral infection. These are complex procedures involving exposure to biological and chemical hazards and require manual dexterity, concentration and attention to detail to achieve accuracy and precision within a specified timescale. The post holder is responsible for carrying out the duties required and to supervise, instruct, train and act as a mentor to less experienced staff.
Applicants require an IBMS Accredited BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree and HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist including successful attainment of a relevant IBMS Specialist Diploma, or equivalent knowledge and experience. Appointment to the position under Agenda for Change Annex 21 terms will be considered however full specialist training to achieve a Specialist Biomedical Scientist position will be unable to be provided within the terms of this appointment.
The post is a fixed term post for 12 months and secondment would be considered for suitably qualified staff members who are currently working in NHS GG&C Laboratory Medicine providing they obtain permission from their Line Manager and Technical Services Manager.
The post is based at the West Regional Covid Testing Hub at the SNBTS Glasgow Clinical Laboratory Building at 25 Shelley Road, Glasgow, G12 0XB and is located adjacent to the Gartnavel Hospital campus. The West Regional Covid Testing Hub Laboratory is part of the NHS GG&C West of Scotland Specialist Virology Service.
Staff appointed to the Specialist Biomedical Scientist role at the West Regional Covid Testing Hub will be contractually required to participate in the 24 hour working arrangement of the Department including weekends, nights (hours worked between 8pm to 8am) and public holidays
