This post offers the opportunity to work as a senior member of an established pharmacy cancer & palliative care team based at the Edinburgh Cancer Centre (ECC) and Western General Hospital (WGH) site. The ECC provides specialist cancer services for the South East of Scotland Cancer Network (SCAN), treating patients with solid tumours and haematological malignancies in day-case, OPD and in-patient settings. It is a specialist tertiary referral centre for a number of rarer cancers and has a teenage and young adult unit. The WGH also has medical, medicine of the elderly, infectious diseases, rheumatology and GI specialties on site.
The post-holder will be a key member of the palliative care multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and will work closely with them to improve and maintain patient services. You will provide professional leadership for clinical pharmacy services to palliative care patients within ECC and across the Western General Hospital (WGH) site & will be closely involved in key projects for this service. Main roles and responsibilities include:
- Lead, plan, develop and provide a clinical pharmacy service to palliative care patients at the Western General Hospital (WGH)
- Provide professional advice and education and training on pharmaceutical issues associated with palliative care to health professionals across NHS Lothian (acute and primary care)
- Provide leadership on the safe and effective use of medicines in palliative care for acute and primary care teams
- Be responsible for leading on clinical protocol development and updates for palliative care
- Provide a defined link with providers of palliative care in the local acute care setting to develop initiatives that support the future strategic aims of palliative care services in NHS Lothian
Applications are invited from pharmacists with excellent communication skills and experience of delivering clinical pharmacy services. Experience of MDT working is essential. A prescribing qualification is highly desirable.
You will participate in the WGH pharmacy department weekend roster (currently a half day every 4 weeks) and the ECC pharmacy service public holiday rota covering the Christmas and New Year public holidays.
