Are you uncertain of your best career pathway?  Want to develop your clinical confidence with evidence of your growing competencies for your CV?  Keen to develop an interest in education, research or management? Then a clinical development post might be for you. An opportunity to grow in confidence as a doctor whilst still gaining supported experience

Fixed term for 6 to 12 months from 4th August 2021

Salary £33,884 - £53,280 per annum based on experience plus banding supplement

Based at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary

Applications are invited for Clinical Development Fellow posts in Medical Specialties which are available from the 4th August 2021 for a period of 6 to 12 months.  These posts are available at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary and are aimed at those doctors who have recently completed their foundation programme or core training or equivalent.

These posts will afford successful applicants the opportunity to gain wide experience in Medical Specialties and develop procedural skills, while enjoying protected and mentored development time.  We are a friendly, supportive, and enthusiastic team, and are aiming to recruit like-minded individuals.

Successful candidates will be contracted for 42 hours per week including 34 hours clinical and 8 hours development time, averaged over a month.  Clinical work will be based on the downstream medical wards at Dumfries Infirmary and will include an Out of Hours (OOH) commitment during the evenings, overnight (1 in 8) and at weekends (1 in 6).  The Medical Specialties represented in Dumfries are Cardiology, Renal, Diabetes and Endocrinology (all on ward D8), Gastroenterology, Infectious Disease and General Medicine (on ward C5), Respiratory and General Medicine (ward B2) and Care of the Elderly (wards C4 and D7).  The post holder will be paid at ST level based on their previous experience.  This post has been banded at 1A.

We anticipate that many of our CDFs will want to teach and will encourage them to enrol in Edinburgh’s Clinical Educator Programme, successful completion of which will satisfy the GMC’s requirements to be recognised as a trainer.  The Dumfries Medical and Emergency Medicine Units teach Glasgow students in their 3rd and 4th year and ScotGEM students in their 2nd and 3rd years (ScotGEM is a 4 year postgraduate degree run by St Andrews and Dundee that is based mainly in primary care with secondary care ‘bursts’).  Our Medicine and Care of the Elderly teaching programmes are highly rated by our students whose feedback places us right at the top of the West of Scotland teaching league table.  CDFs will find there are abundant opportunities to teach and to mentor students.  We will in addition set aside up to £1500 per annum per CDFs for study leave.  There will be opportunities for CDFs to learn and then deliver simulation to our medical students and to undertake project work which, if successful, could lead to a poster at a national meeting or publication in a peer reviewed journal.  Appointment will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff and Doctors and Dentists in Public Health Medicine and the Community Health Service (Scotland).

Accommodation will be free and either at Mountainhall (easy cycle to work with access to a Park Run course and playing fields) or in private flats in the town.
