We are continuing to hire during COVID-19. Our recruitment process is 100% remote and if successful you would work remotely, only working from our offices once official guidance supports this.
NDS (NES Digital Service) is a fast-growing team within NHS Scotland using a modern tech stack and lean agile development practices to build and scale a new digital platform and services helping improve health & social care for millions across Scotland.

We deliver quickly… in 10 days we designed, built, and launched a complex service for people shielding during COVID lockdown ensuring access to regular food parcel deliveries and priority supermarket delivery slots.
THE OPPORTUNITY
As our first User Researcher, you would be joining NDS at an exciting time where our cross-functional teams are hungry for more user-centred research expertise to elevate our work.
You will be collaborating with an unusual mix including technology, service design, interaction design, clinical and operational professionals.
Participating in a range of research activities and methods you will communicate actionable insights to teams helping to ensure the services we develop are founded on a solid understanding and analysis of users and their needs.
You will have the opportunity to work with a broad range of including patients, citizens and those in NHS Scotland and other organisations involved in providing patient care.
Your work will deliver insights in the present and lay the foundations at NDS for growing user research practice in health and care in the future
Your work that will directly inform the development and delivery of digital services for clinicians, care workers and the general public.
If you were in this role today here's some of the things you may be doing…
- Working within a cross-functional product teams working in the context of cancer treatment, end of life care and vaccinations
- Researching, understanding, creating and sharing holistic user journeys in a clear, engaging way
- Leading user research workshops and events with NDS colleagues and stakeholders
- Actively promoting the user research perspective in discussion with colleagues and stakeholders
- Taking a walk during the day to enjoy the fresh air and come back to work with new ideas and new energy
- Taking part in a cross-NDS discussion on team culture or progressive recruitment
- Representing NDS and your talent across the user research community in Scottish public services and beyond by sharing your ideas in blogposts and talks
WHAT WE LOVE TO SEE
- Significant experience working in user research including recruiting participants; preparing discussion guides and moderating research methods
- Expertise with a variety of user research methods and tools
- Analysing research data, presenting clear and actionable findings
- Awareness of how best to demonstrate the value of user research methodologies and processes
- Skills in one or more of agile working, community collaboration, facilitating decisions, leadership
- Experience working in a cross-functional team making (ideally consumer-facing) digital products & services
- A genuine interest in improving health and social care/public services (direct experience is a bonus)

It’s not essential to be in a User Research role right now. You could be returning from maternity, a career break or returning to User Research after working in another field
