General Surgeon with an Interest in Major Trauma

The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital

The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital has a Department of Surgery offering state of the art care in Colorectal, Upper GI, Breast and Endocrine services. We are looking to expand our consultant team to support the Trauma Centre.

The QEUH will be designated as a Level 2 Trauma Centre in 2021.  The successful candidate will have surgical sub-specialty skills to support the development of the Department of Surgery and an interest in trauma.  A major trauma ward will be developed on site and this post will have input into the care of the patients in that area. Trauma surgery will be provided by the Orthopaedic Trauma team and the General Surgical on-call teams.

The successful applicant will also participate in the Emergency General Surgery on-call. The Consultant will be expected to provide in-patient and outpatient services at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Victoria ACH and Gartnavel General Hospital as required by any future configurations of the Department. It is expected that the successful applicant will actively participate in the development of a Trauma Managed Clinical Network, as well as established Networks pertaining to their sub-specialty interest.

As well as providing clinical services, the successful candidate will be required to participate in the training and assessment of junior staff and to undertake the administrative duties required in a consultant job. This will include but not be exclusive to the maintenance of appropriate patient records, keeping and participating in personal and unit audit and the retention of documentation for appraisal. All consultants are required to have an annual appraisal.

Emergency Surgery for the post is based at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital with clinics and elective surgery split between there and either the New Victoria Hospital or Gartnavel General Hospital.  Fully staffed Intensive Care and High dependency beds will be well utilised.  Clinical Nurse Specialists are valued members of the teams. Applicants should have a broad surgical training and should have full GMC registration and eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register.

UK trainees will have evidence of Higher Specialist Training leading to CCT, or be six months of confirmed entry from the date of interview.  Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
