This is an exciting opportunity to join a progressive department situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Scotland. We deliver two comprehensive, high quality and highly specialised microbiological reference services: the Scottish Toxoplasma Reference Laboratory (STRL) and the newly formed Scottish Lyme Disease and Tick-borne infections Reference Laboratory (SLDTRL).  As such, we offer testing for patients from throughout Scotland as well as clinical and technical advice. We also work closely with Health Protection Scotland to provide epidemiological information.

The reference laboratories are situated within the Microbiology department at Raigmore Hospital, which offers a comprehensive Microbiology service to clinicians throughout the NHS Highland area. The department has 3 sections: Culture (bacterial culture, antibiotic sensitivity, antigen detection), Molecular (bacteria and virus), Serology (bacterial and viral serology and Immunology tests).

As Senior Biomedical Scientist you will be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of the two reference services. You will join a small but established team, working closely with the director, clinical lead, departmental manager, BMS and support staff within the section but will be expected to liaise with colleagues within the Microbiology department as a whole.

You will have a considerable degree of autonomy and responsibility for providing professional, scientific and technical expertise in the delivery of the reference service as well as a research commitment to further develop the service provided.

Applicants who can demonstrate team spirit, motivate people, have initiative and flexibility, will be HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist , have an Honours degree in Microbiology or a relevant Science subject and an MSc in Microbiology (or similar). You must have a minimum of five years experience of working in a Microbiology laboratory with extensive experience in a range of serological and molecular techniques and ideally, some research experience. You must possess excellent communication skills both oral and written, and be fully computer literate.  On-site training will be provided if necessary.
