National Clinical Lead for Access (055124)

Secondment to 31 March 2022 (2 sessions per week – 8 hours)

Commensurate with existing salary

Remote working will apply for the foreseeable future.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced consultant with a background in elective care to join Healthcare Improvement Scotland to provide national clinical leadership to improving access to planned care.

The role will primarily focus on providing clinical leadership to the Access QI programme.  Access QI is a collaboration between Healthcare Improvement Scotland, NHS Education for Scotland and participating NHS boards. We work together to use quality improvement methodology to redesign and improve planned care pathways, leading to sustainable and affordable improvements in waiting times.

National Clinical Lead for Access is pivotal to ensuring the organisation has the clinical expertise and credibility to:

  • contribute towards the planning, design and development of work focused on improving access,
  • build positive working relationships with clinical communities and other national organisations supporting NHS boards to improve access,
  • coach senior clinicians from NHS boards participating in access improvement work to overcome challenges when improving local pathways,
  • work with non-clinical colleagues to review emerging evidence and capture examples of good practice of services using quality improvement to improve access, and
  • spread emerging learning from access quality improvement work with clinical communities throughout Scotland via a combination of in-person and digital channels.

Candidates should have knowledge of delivering planned care services in a senior medical role in NHS Scotland.  They should also have experience using quality improvement methodologies to significantly improve planned care pathways. Exceptional interpersonal and influencing skills will be fundamental to the success of the role and candidates should have experience engaging and influencing a wide range of stakeholders to change clinical practice.
