The Scottish Standards of Care for Hip Fracture Patients aims for ‘at least 50% of all hip fracture patients that are identified as frail to have a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) completed within 2 days of admission, 100% within 3 days’. The development of the role of a specialist Elderly Care Orthopaedic Nurse (ECON), who would compliment the medical assessment and review of fracture patients in the acute trauma wards, would enhance patient care and allow the National Standards to be achieved. As part of a multidisciplinary team the post holder will have responsibility for assessment of care needs and the development of programmes of care, and / or the implementation and evaluation of these programmes ensuring the delivery of high quality care to patients. The role will include assessment of presenting conditions, assessment of falls, fracture and frailty risk factors, initiation of investigations and appropriate treatments, triage and facilitation of onwards transfer of patients to rehabilitation wards, liaison with the Fracture Liaison Service, next of kin, community falls and rehabilitation teams, and where appropriate discharge of patients with arrangement of relevant follow up. It is essential that you are currently a tRegistered Nurse with 3 years experience, 2 years of which were within relevant specialty. Evidence of further education including post graduate certification / diploma/ continuous professional development in relevant area of practice. The shift pattern for this post is 5 days over 7.
