DIAGNOSTIC DIRECTORATE
DEPARTMENT OF CLINICAL PHYSICS AND BIO-ENGINEERING

Radiotherapy Physics
Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre
Glasgow CRUK RadNet Radiation Research Centre of Excellence

SENIOR PRACTITIONER CLINICAL PHYSICIST
Band 7
Fixed Term Contract: 18 months

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Clinical Physicist to work jointly within the NHS Radiotherapy Physics Department at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and within the CRUK RadNet Radiation Research Centre of Excellence in Glasgow.

The Beatson Cancer Centre operates thirteen linear accelerators, including eleven Varian TrueBeam systems, with a wide range of specialised VMAT planning techniques including SABR for a wide range of clinical sites, all delivered using FFF technology. We are a world-leading site in the implementation of model-based optimisation algorithms.

Complementing the Beatson’s commitment to excellence in clinical radiotherapy treatment, the CRUK RadNet Centre Glasgow is one of 7 UK centres tasked by CRUK with developing and evaluating new clinical radiotherapy techniques. The aim of RadNet Glasgow is to increase cure rates in patients with five cancers of unmet need: glioblastoma, lung cancer (including mesothelioma); head & neck cancer, pancreatic cancer and rectal cancer.

While reporting to the Deputy Head of Radiotherapy Physics, the successful candidate will divide their activities on an equal basis between the NHS Radiotherapy Physics department and the RadNet research program.   Joint supervisory arrangements have been agreed and a degree of flexibility in day-to-day working arrangements will be required.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain specialist knowledge and experience within a large radiotherapy Centre, contributing to aspects of the scientific support services provided in the NHS Department while playing a significant role in a world-leading research program.  In their NHS role, the person appointed will contribute to the commissioning of complex radiotherapy equipment, help develop new planning techniques, develop new QA systems, provide support for Clinical Trials, contribute to teaching and training and participate in varied projects underpinning the operation of the Cancer Centre.  In their RadNet role, the appointee will work as part of a large and expanding multidisciplinary research team. As well as providing expert physics input to new and ongoing radiotherapy research initiatives, they will be encouraged to develop their own research projects and will be fully supported in this aim.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate evidence of experience in radiotherapy, be state registered Clinical Scientists and should preferably hold Corporate Membership of IPEM. Opportunity for registration for a research degree may be possible through the University of Glasgow.

Appointment is for 18 months in the first instance, with the expectation that this will be extended subject to performance and renewal of research funding.

Applicants currently engaged in a recognised training scheme who expect to obtain state registration within the next 2 years may be considered for appointment under AfC Annexe 21 arrangements.
The shift pattern is; 07.30-20.00
