You will assess, plan, implement and evaluate evidenced based programmes of care with reference to patients, without direct supervision.
You will co-ordinate the provision of seamless care for patients from admission to discharge by utilising efficient verbal and written communication practices with all members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team / Primary Care Services and Carers. You will take responsibility for a defined group of patients within the clinical specialty, provide senior cover and manages the ward/department area in the absence of the Senior Charge Nurse or Deputy. In conjunction with the Senior Charge Nurse ensures that nursing resource is utilised efficiently by managing on duty rosters, short notice sickness absence and manpower resources to comply with agreed policy and procedure. You will ensure effective management of ward/department resources including stores, supplies and medicines.
Provide teaching, guidance, supervision and support for junior staff (qualified and non-qualified). You will assist the Senior Charge Nurse in the development of ward/department based orientation and education programmes for newly qualified staff and student nurses and acts as mentor / preceptor as required, providing teaching, guidance, supervision and support for junior staff (qualified and non-qualified). You will participate in performance appraisal of self and junior staff in line with personal, directorate and organisational objectives. You will participate in ward/department and Directorate audit activity where appropriate and assist in the development of evidenced based practice as required, participate in the out of hours Surgical Unit page holding duties for the operational management of the Directorate/Unit, imparting clinical expertise and advice when required. You will ensure that all written documentation within the ward/department area is clear, concise, timely and complies with the NMC Standards for Records and Record Keeping. You will assist with the safe custody of patient’s personal belongings in accordance with organisational policy, is aware of, observes and adheres to hospital, organisational and national policies. Works within the NMC code of practice and professional guidelines. You will report all accidents/incidents/complaints involving patients, carers and staff to the senior nurse and commence enquiries or documentation as necessary. You will participate in the identification of risk and risk management strategies incorporating these, through nurse management, to the risk register and ensure that risks to patients are identified through the use of the Clinical Incident Reporting System (DATIX). You will keep abreast of changes in Health and Safety Legislation and policies with particular regard to COSHH, Fire, RIDDOR, Infection Control & Manual Handling. It is essential that you are currently a Registered Nurse with the NMC and that you have relevant clinical experience. The shift pattern for this post is rotational 12 hour shifts.
