Paisley is a small cathedral town situated adjacent to the City of Glasgow with close access to all of this major City’s amenities. This includes an International Airport. There is attractive countryside adjacent sitting in the west central Lowlands of Scotland located north of the beautiful scenery of the Glennifer Braes and Nature reserve of Lochwinnoch.  Paisley is famous for its rich industrial heritage and is where the world famous Paisley pattern originated.  

Applications are invited from dynamic and enthusiastic individuals for this full time Older Adult psychiatry post.  This post is based at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley covering psychiatric services for older adults who reside in the West Renfrewshire areas of Johnstone, Linwood, Bridge of Weir and Lochwinnoch; approximately 11,800 population which is a mixture of urban and rural settings.

The post-holder will be supported by appropriate medical secretary time, a speciality grade doctor and most often by junior doctor input. There is a total of 5 older adult consultants in the Renfrewshire HSCP department with a further 22 old age psychiatric consultants in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Inpatient Older People’s Mental Health Services in Renfrewshire are provided at Ward 37 and 39 at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. These are two acute wards; one 20 bedded functional assessment ward and one 20 bedded organic assessment ward. Two 20 bedded, single sex, hospital based complex care beds (HBCC) which are based at Dykebar Hospital. Other consultant colleagues are  RMO for the HBCC wards

Within Renfrewshire there is an Older Peoples Community Mental Health Team based at Ward 38, Royal Alexandra Hospital providing care and treatment to the older adults within Renfrewshire. The Team is multidisciplinary and has medical staff, a Clinical Psychologist, OT’s, CPNs, Care Home and Hospital Liaison Nurses (who feed into the Older Adult Liaison Consultant) and Post Diagnostic Support Workers. Outpatient psychiatric services are provided at Ward 38.

The department has an established old age liaison psychiatry service to both the acute wards at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the local care homes; which is led by one of the consultants.  There is an established Primary Care Mental Health Service and older adults with a primary functional illness have access to crisis services via the Intensive Home Treatment Team which is consultant led.

The successful candidate would be encouraged to take the opportunities available for further education and continuing professional development.  There are active education, audit and research programmes. There is excellent peer support with monthly case based discussion and Team planning meetings involving the Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Old Age consultants.

The post is advertised as a 9:1 Direct Clinical care: Supporting Professional Activity split with Job planning being negotiable. Previous consultant and clinical experience will be taken into account. Less than full time working could be considered and agreed with the Clinical Director.

Renfrewshire consultants participate in the South Glasgow and Clyde on call rota with a current on call frequency of 1:25 (non-resident). There is usually a second on rota of higher trainees. With agreement from the Associate Medical Director the post holder will have the opportunity to opt-out of this rota.

There is an Older Adult Mental Health Strategy under way within Greater Glasgow and Clyde which is reviewing effective and efficient working patterns and service design. The post holder would have the opportunity to help shape this service for the future as well as provide clinical leadership to their team.
