Orkney consistently comes out on top in national lifestyle and happiness surveys. In 2020 Orkney was revealed as the best place to live in Scotland, according to the Bank of Scotland Quality of Life survey. Lying off the northern coast of Scotland, between John O’Groats and the Shetland Isles, Orkney is an archipelago of over 70 beautiful islands, 17 of which are inhabited. The total population is approximately 22,000 with most people living on the Mainland. Orkney has a vibrant, welcoming and innovative community. Our thriving economy means that unemployment is low and the cost of living here is lower than you would thing, with house prices well below the national average.
Kirkwall, the capital, with a population of 7,500 is a bustling and busy town with a historic centre full of character. Shops line the main street as it weaves its way from Kirkwall’s beautiful harbourfront. Here you will find some of the town’s award-winning restaurants and pubs. The town centre was also named Scotland’s Most Beautiful High Street in 2019.
Orkney is truly a great place for a family. The educational system is extensive as it is excellent, from pre-school to postgraduate. We might be a small community but sporting clubs in Orkney compete to a high level across Scotland. The Pickaquoy Centre in Kirkwall boasts two swimming pools, a well-equipped gym, squash courts, climbing wall, indoor courts, in addition to other facilities including a cinema and an arena which hosts major concerts, gigs, performances and sporting competitions.
You might think Orkney is remote, and whilst there are remote islands, Kirkwall has several flights a day (just under 1 hour) connecting to the mainland. There is extensive 4G coverage and high-speed broadband across most parts of Orkney, so you will never feel isolated here. Very low crime levels and a strong sense of community make Orkney a safe and secure environment for all ages too. And the best bit being very little traffic anywhere.
Rise to the challenge and enjoy the opportunity – Orkney is a wonderful place to live and work and offers low pollution, low crime, excellent schools, state-of-the-art health and leisure facilities, unique wildlife and breath-taking scenery. But don’t take our word for it - come and see for yourself! Please feel free to visit the islands and The Balfour where you will find a very warm welcome.
An excellent relocation package of up to £8,000 is available depending on eligibility.
A supplemental Distant Islands Allowance, which is currently £1,314, is also added to NHS Orkney salaries on a pro rata basis.
