NHS National Services Scotland (NSS) works at the very heart of the health service in Scotland, providing a diverse range of services to ensure frontline patient care is delivered effectively. As well as direct services such as blood transfusion and national screening programmes, the Agency provides a wide range of support services such as: collation, interpretation and dissemination of information; payment of primary care practitioners; surveillance of infectious and communicable diseases; national procurement; counter fraud services and provision of expert legal services.
The Data and Analytics Department, which consists of a team of 44 data and analytics specialists, is part of the Digital Innovation & Transformation tower of the 300-odd strong Digital and Security Strategic Business Unit (SBU). The team delivers innovative Data and Advanced Analytical solutions used by managers, clinicians, statisticians and researchers across NHS Scotland, Scottish Government and Local Government.
Current technologies include Oracle Exadata Data Warehousing, Data Virtualisation, Azure ML Artificial Intelligence. Tableau data visualisation and Business Objects reporting. A technical modernisation programme is in progress to enhance and expand the Data & Analytical capabilities by implementing big data capabilities and further advanced analytical capabilities.
This is an excellent opportunity for a student to gain valuable industry experience in Data & Analytics – an exciting, fast growing discipline rated strategically important in 9 out of 10 organisations (Gartner).
The student will work within the Business Intelligence team to develop and support business intelligence applications.
Tasks will include:
• development and support of data marts and extract, transformation and load (ETL) procedures;
• development and support of virtual data platforms for analytics
• development and support of Business Objects universes, dashboards and reports
• development and support of Tableau data extracts and visualisations/dashboards
• liaising with business users to gather and analyse requirements
• being involved in enablement activities such as webinars & events across the analytical community in NHS Scotland
The SBU works within an ITIL service management framework.
