Trainee Forensic Medical Examiner - 2 posts

Due to two retirements, 2 opportunities have arisen to recruit to the Clinical Forensic Medicine team.  Not many people know what the role of a Forensic Medical Examiner is as it is a small service, but vital.  It is a varied role working with the Forensic Medicine team and detailed below gives you a flavour of what you will be involved with.

  • Performing forensic medical assessment and treatment provision to both victims and suspects of crime, including obtaining DNA evidence, sexual offences examination, documentation and treatment of injuries and giving an opinion on these.
  • Preparation of medical reports for court purposes.
  • Child protection examinations done jointly with Paediatric colleagues at RACH, for cases of suspected non-accidental injury, child sexual abuse and neglect.
  • Performing examinations relating to impaired driving due to drugs and alcohol.
  • Providing support to the Custody Nursing team for more complex clinical cases in custody, much of which is mental health and substance misuse related, but also general medical care and medication support.

During a training period you will work in a supervised capacity and receive all necessary training. There is also fully funded two- day NES training course in Examination and Clinical Management in Sexual Offences that will be required to be undertaken within 6 months upon acceptance of this role.

Post 1 -      Every 4th Sunday night and every second Friday daytime. (9 hours a week)

       Post 2 -     Every weds daytime and one weekend in four Sat 6am through to Sunday 6pm. (18 hours a week)

There will be additional ad hoc shifts ie holiday cover, court day cover, and some reciprocal flexibility will be expected from all team members to help maintain full cover for the service.

Salary scale - paid on an item per service type basis at present but negotiations on-going regarding move to a salaried model.

Applicants must have a medical degree and Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.

A post-graduate qualification such as MRCGP. Any alternative/ additional Sexual Health or Psychiatry qualification or experience would also be welcomed.

The job is interesting and varied, working in partnership with the Police Service of Scotland, providing assistance in the investigation of criminal activity.
