Mental Helath - Lead Nurse Interpersonal Psychotherapy Acute Crisis (IPT AC)


This is an exciting opportunity for a Lead IPT AC Nurse to manage the delivery of this psychotherapeutic intervention in the Emergency Department (ED) and Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE).

The post holder has lead professional and managerial responsibility for the Prospect Model IPT AC Test of Concept service allocated to the specialist service within the RIE, and has overall responsibility for both clinical and staff governance issues. This is within an acute hospital setting.

The post holder will ensure the highest standard of personalised nursing care is delivered to patients and their families in partnership with all members of the multidisciplinary team. The post holder will have responsibility for carrying out mental health, bio-psychosocial assessments and risk assessments of patients attending the AMU and ED at the RIE and other areas of the hospital where patients are receiving medical treatment. They will deliver high quality care in accordance with the values, skills and knowledge of the capability framework; carrying a small out-patient caseload and being involved in the care planning of patients who attend the ED on a frequent basis. The post holder will also deliver IPT AC and follow-up to specified patient groups as part of the Prospect Model IPT AC Test of Concept service allocated to the specialist service within Psychological Medicine at the RIE. As well as having lead professional responsibility for this service, the post holder will line manage and motivate two IPT AC mental health liaison nurses who will also deliver the IPT AC intervention, ensuring they provide high standards of care by acting as a role model.

The individual will provide expert professional and clinical care advice (including advice on the appropriate and safe delivery of IPT AC, maintaining regular information sharing sessions with other Psychological Medicine staff) and advice to patients, carers and the multidisciplinary team. They will also oversee the evaluation of the IPT AC intervention on site, ensuring strict adherence to protocol and data collection procedures. The post holder will have:

  • First level registered nurse withextensive, relevant post registration, with expereince at Band 6 or relevant experience demonstrating the appropriate competencies and skills for the job
  • Educated to Degree level or working towards this
  • Evidence of further education including postgraduate certification/diploma/Continuous Professional Development in relevant area.
  • Evidence of management, education and training.

The post-holder will receive line management from the clinical nurse manager, and will work closely with the liaison psychiatry team as patients are often referred between the psychiatrists and the IPT AC service.

The service is 08.45-1600hrs Mon-Fri/ 0900-1300 Sat/Sun Rotational basis.

The post holder will regularly liaise with the Prospect Model Service Development Team. The IPT AC test of concept service at the Department of Psychological Medicine is one strand of the Prospect Model Programme of IPT work. Post holder and other IPT AC mental health liaison nurses will receive regular direct clinical supervision from the Prospect Model consultant clinical psychologist.
