A vacancy has arisen for a Trainee Vocational Activity Instructor to be based within the Garden & Animal Assisted Therapy Department, located in the Skye Centre. The post-holder will work as part of a team providing therapeutic horticultural and will also be required to support the delivery of animal therapy activities for the patients. The role involves working closely with the Senior Vocational Activity Instructors and Charge Nurse, to provide activity and interventions that are beneficial for the improvement of the patients’ mental health and contribute to their care and treatment plan. The post holder will be expected to support the provision of vocational qualifications for the patients in horticulture and/or related topics.

This trainee post is a 2year programme.  During this period, you will be trained to carry out the range of tasks required within the role.  You will work towards achieving a NC Horticulture in order to gain relevant knowledge and skills to enable you to progress and develop within this role. You will also be required to complete the SQA Assessor Qualification. Opportunities will be made available to shadow colleagues and be able to learn from others whilst building on your confidence and knowledge. You will be expected to link in with your identified line manager for regular updates on progress and will be given an identified mentor/assessor to monitor progress and achievement of the identified award.

You will be employed initially on a fixed term 2year trainee contract.  On successful completion of the trainee programme you will transition to permanent employment as a Band 4 Vocational Activity Instructor within the Gardens Department.  Further information about the Trainee programme is included in the job pack for this post.

The Trainee Vocational Activity Instructor post is open to anyone aged 18 years and over.

We are looking for a person who has a keen interest in horticulture and is motivated to learn new skills and knowledge in order to deliver this activity within a therapeutic environment

Applicants must have a minimum of four National 5s at bands A-C (including English and Maths), or equivalent SCQF level awards/qualifications, OR have previous work experience.

We would welcome applicants who are caring, compassionate and enthusiastic and able to work well as part of a team. You will be an effective communicator with positive interpersonal skills and committed to work with patients experiencing severe and enduring mental health problems
