The National Services for Paediatric Cardiac Surgery and Paediatric Interventional Cardiology is delivered from the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC), Glasgow and includes an out of hours emergency service. The centre provides a service for all patients with congenital heart disease, as well as specialised investigations to paediatric patients and families within the local area.

The Department provides all forms of Complex Paediatric Cardiological Investigation via a highly trained Paediatric Cardiac Physiologist team.

Complex investigations include; Trans-oesophageal Ultrasound imaging during Paediatric cardiac surgery and catheter-lab intervention; Diagnostic Trans-oesophageal ultrasound imaging  at time of  CT scanning  and during Diagnostic Cardiac catheterisation, Epicardial ultrasound during Paediatric Cardiac surgery and in Paediatric Intensive care unit; Ultrasound guidance of Extra Corporeal Membrane oxygenation cannula insertion; Epicardial/Transvenous pacemaker/ICD/lead threshold assessment, during implantation: Radio Frequency generator use, during  perforation of atretic valve tissue and Diagnostic Electrophysiological studies including ablation.

As part of this specialised physiology staff, the Paediatric Electrocardiographic Investigations service is seamlessly provided by all staff, including standard/paediatric ECG and Intracardiac Electrocardiography coupled with Implantable Device home monitoring (pacemakers included), all forms of ambulatory ECG monitoring, Non-invasive BP monitoring and stress provocation testing.

The Department provides patient investigations including ECG’s to non cardiac patients including Renal, Neurology, Haematology and Community Psychiatric Services.

Essential

  • BSc Honours Degree in Clinical Physiology or equivalent experience
  • Able to demonstrate substantial post qualification experience, with relevant experience and competencies working as a paediatric specialist and include carrying out advanced diagnostic and/or therapeutic investigations, providing clinical reports and expert opinion.
  • BSE/European Accreditation in Congenital Heart Disease Echocardiography or equivalent and/or

the North American Society of Pacing & Electrophysiology Accreditation exam (IHBRE)

  • High level and experience in formal presentations and will be expected to make presentations to other cardiac and non-cardiac clinical staff and at professional meetings.
  • Able to demonstrate can work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to lead development of Cardiac Service(s) within the district/area/region in accordance with initiatives and guidelines.
  • Able to demonstrate participation in the teaching of other health professionals including medical staff in some of the highly specialised investigations.


Desirable

  • Hold a higher qualification (e.g. MSc, PhD) or equivalent knowledge and skills to that level.
  • Holds or intends working towards a post-graduate certificate/NHS training to lead certificate in management and or cardiac management speciality.
  • Advanced/Intermediate Paediatric Life Support Accreditation
  • Accepted onto the voluntary ST register for State Registration (RCCP)
  • Have published or have co-authored research publications in cardiology

Experience in the management of an Adult/ Paediatric department
