Job Advert

The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) is a division of NHS National Services Scotland (NSS). Accountable to the Scottish Government, NSS works at the very heart of the health service, providing national support services and expert advice to NHS Scotland. It also plays an active and crucial role in the delivery of effective healthcare to patients and the public.
SNBTS is the specialist provider of transfusion medicine in Scotland. We collect and supply blood, tissues, cells and services to hospitals. We work with communities, hospitals and professionals to ensure that the donor's gift is used wisely and effectively for the benefit of patients.
Within SNBTS, Tissues, Cells and Advanced Therapeutics (TCAT) are responsible for the collection, manufacture and supply of a range of products such as heart tissue, tendons, bone, haematopoietic stem cells, pancreatic islets and a range of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products. We are also in the process of taking on responsibility for a number of other tissue and cell products.
As a result of the departmental expansion we have a new vacancy for a Specialty Doctor within TCAT. The post holder will work closely and support the Clinical Lead for TCAT, the TCAT nursing team and the TCAT scientific staff. The TCAT team supports SNBTS’ mission to supply safe high quality tissue and cell products from both living and deceased donors by advising on donor assessment and selection. Using your clinical knowledge and experience, you will be provided with training to allow you to develop expertise in carrying out detailed donor assessments (both living and deceased donors) to ensure safety of the donation supply, management of incidents, the management and referral of donors found to have abnormal results and will also help support raising awareness about tissue and cell donation with healthcare professionals and the general public. Your contact with donor’s/donor families will usually be by phone, email or letter.
Applicants are required to have four years’ experience after graduation. Experience of a range of clinical specialties (e.g. general practice or general medicine) would be valuable to this role. Previous donor assessment experience is not required as full training will be given in post.
The role is based at the Jack Copland Centre, although it will be possible to do some parts of the job from home and a degree of flexible working would be required.
The successful candidate will be required to undergo a PVG Scheme Disclosure/Disclosure Scotland check. Any candidate who has worked overseas for more than 12 months in the preceding 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.
Candidates must have current GMC registration at the time of applying.
Our benefits package includes pension scheme, comprehensive range of work life balance policies, occupational health services, learning resource centres and discounted leisure, financial and shopping benefits.
For an informal discussion on the post, please contact Dr Sharon Zahra, Clinical Lead for Tissues, Cells and Advanced Therapeutics on Tel: 07826 910182.
