Annex 21 Development Post

Band 6 Trainee - £33,072 -  £40,736 per annum

Band 7 on completion of training - £40,872 - £47,846 per annum

Plus Distant Islands Allowance £1,117 per annum

An opportunity has arisen for a Trainee Sonographer in General Medical Ultrasound. This post is advertised as a trainee position under the Annex 21 paragraph 2(i). Whilst studying you will be paid within the band 6 salary range and upon confirmation of successful completion of the required competencies you will move to the band 7 role of Sonographer. 


Candidates should hold a proven clinical and academic record and can demonstrate their ability to meet the course needs and challenging timescales. Some study time will be allocated but the applicant must be self motivated in relation to studying in their own time.

The Western Isles Health Board serves the whole of the Western Isles (also known as the Outer Hebrides) from the Isle of Barra in the South to the Isle of Lewis in the North, with a population of approximately 27,000.  The post will be based at the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis with sessional visits to the Uist and Barra Hospital in Benbecula to provide ultrasound clinic cover.

The service currently boasts Carestream RIS / PACS and both DR and CR imaging. The department is supported by 2 Canon Aplio i700 ultrasound scanners, 2 GE Logiq E AAA ultrasound scanners, Siemens Luminos digital fluoroscopy unit, Toshiba Aquillion Prime SP 80 slice CT scanner, Phillips Digital Diagnost general x-ray, Philips Pulsera mobile fluoroscopy and GE Lunar DXA scanner.


The successful candidate must currently hold: 

  • BSc Hons/DCR in Diagnostic Radiography with current HCPC registration
  • Extensive postgraduate experience in multiple areas of Diagnostic Radiography
  • Excellent team-working and leadership skills
