The Neonatal Transport Service forms part of the Specialist Transport and Retrieval Service for Scotland – ScotSTAR.  ScotSTAR incorporates the Scottish Neonatal Transport Service, the Scottish Paediatric Retrieval Service, the Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (EMRS) and the Air Ambulance Service.  ScotSTAR is managed by the Scottish Ambulance Service and undertakes approximately 3000 transfers per year.

The Neonatal Team are looking to expand the Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (ANNP) workforce and looking for highly motivated individuals to join them. The post holder will provide advanced clinical care to neonates and their families and will be expected to make management decisions about patient care with the support of the team. The neonatal service has incorporated technological advances in neonatal intensive care and has capability for the use of HFVO, NCPAP, High Flow and inhaled nitric oxide, phototherapy and servo-controlled systemic hypothermia during transfers.

These vacancies will offer Registered Nurses (adult/child branch), who hold an ANNP Diploma at master’s level, with neonatal intensive care expertise working at junior medical rota level or above in a level 3 unit, the opportunity to join this unique Service. Transport experience, although desirable is not necessary as training will be given in all aspects of the post.

The majority of transfers are done using dedicated road ambulances with a small number being done by fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft, provided by the Air Ambulance Service.  The team is composed of experienced transport Nurses, ANNP’S, Nurse Consultants, Transport fellows, and Consultant Neonatologists. 

In addition to the clinical role the post holder will be involved in the following areas:

  • Assisting with training of rural doctors, nurses and paramedics
  • Education and training within ScotSTAR and in conjunction with SAS
  • Audit and research
  • Equipment management
  • Service development
  • Clinical governance, safety and safe system development
  • Continuous quality improvement

The post will be within in the East Scotstar team based at Neonatal Department at Edinburgh Royal, this location is currently under review.
