Locum Consultant General Surgeon with an Upper GI Interest

University Hospital Monklands

University Hospital Monklands (UHM) is looking for 2 Locum Consultant Surgeons with an interest in Upper GI to join its team of Consultants and wider multi-disciplinary team.

The successful candidates will work closely with the present staff to accommodate general surgical service needs. University Hospital Monklands is a busy district general hospital with a friendly and dynamic consultant body. We have an excellent working relationship within the consultant body and junior staff.  The unit is fully staffed with a two tier middle grade rota running 24 hours a day.

The General Surgery Department is part of the Surgical & Critical Care Directorate, which provides services within a 7 theatre main operating suite and a stand-alone 2 theatre day unit and 2 theatre Endoscopy Unit.

The successful candidates will be expected to be able to manage a broad range of upper GI conditions and contribute to the further development of NHS Lanarkshire acute laparoscopic cholecystectomy pathways. Experience in dealing with acute biliary emergencies including cholangiography is essential. There may be opportunities for the post-holder to develop other special interests within upper GI surgery (e.g. fundoplication, common bile duct exploration or splenectomy). Experience in CBD exploration would be desirable and, mentoring would be available if the successful candidate wished to develop this area of their practice.

The individuals will be required to have a flexible team based work ethic and will participate in the emergency on call general surgical rota at University Hospital Monklands which is currently 1 in 8 with this appointment. The General Surgical Department will comprise 3 consultant surgeons with a general/upper GI interest and 5 with a general/colorectal interest. All of whom undertake general surgery and perform a wide range of laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures. Interventional radiology is available in Monklands with complex intervention and vascular services based at Hairmyres hospital.

University Hospital Monklands is a district general hospital allowing a varied practice and is also hosts a number of regional specialist services including ENT, Infectious Diseases, Renal Medicine, Oral & Maxillofacial and Urology.

University Hospital Monklands sits at the heart of the community and is one of 3 hospitals serving Scotland’s third largest health board. It is a centre of excellence for a number of specialties including ENT surgery. All services are currently working to design and realise new models of care for the replacement University Hospital Monklands which will be Scotland’s flagship digital hospital, to be built in 2028.

The hospital is situated in the West of Scotland on the national motorway network 25 minutes from Glasgow, and 35 minutes from Stirling. It has excellent communication links enabling a choice of living in city and rural areas. It is within a one-hour drive from Loch Lomond and Edinburgh.
