This is an exciting opportunity to apply for this new post to support the increased workload, expansion and development of Respiratory and General Medicine at NHS Grampian. The successful applicant will be based within the Respiratory Service at ARI, Aberdeen. NHS Grampian serves a population of 620,000.
The in–patient Respiratory provision consists of a 30 bedded in-patient ward and an expansion ward co-located with Cardiology of 24 beds. There will be ample opportunity to maintain and develop subspecialist skills, depending on the interest and skills of the applicant.
General Medicine is mostly split between two wards – Ward 105 and Ward 110. Both wards accommodate acute medical patients from the ED, Acute Medical Initial Assessment (AMIA) Unit and direct transfers from other hospitals. Moreover, patients can be stepped down to the wards from Medical High Dependency Unit (MHDU) and Intensive Care Unit.
The advertised post is for a Consultant in Respiratory and General Medicine. This will offer involvement in most aspects of Respiratory Medicine in a large teaching hospital environment.
Specific duties will include
- The care of new and return patients at Respiratory clinics (expected to be 2-3/week)
- Care of boarded Respiratory patients, referrals, ward reviews (COW-B, 1 in 8)
- Regular Bronchoscopy +/- EBUS
- Cover of the acute inpatient beds in General Medicine on a rota basis 1:5 weeks. This would include a handover session on Friday morning. The successful candidate is expected to do a ward round on Saturday and Sunday seeing patients on Wards 110. At the moment there is no on call service required out of hours, but this might change in the future.
- A contribution to the Cystic Fibrosis service may be offered.
- A wish to be involved in one or more other subspecialty areas within Respiratory Medicine could be negotiated.

Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register from date of interview.
Alternatively, applicants should possess a CESR / CESR (CP).
Applications from doctors with appropriate specialist training and experience who are not listed on the GMC Specialist Register can be considered for a Locum Consultant post (up to 12 months) if no substantive Consultant appointment is made. Whilst in locum employment, an application to obtain a CESR / CESR (CP) and entry onto the Specialist Register can be made.
