The post holder will be required to:-

•    The post holder is responsible for the delivery, management and on-going development of effective Specialist Pathology Services provided within NHSGGC. Histopathology services include Electron Microscopy, Paediatric Pathology, Neuropathology, Immunocytochemistry, In Situ Hybridisation, Special Stains & Enzyme histochemistry. Cytology Services include Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) testing, Cervical Cytology, Diagnostic Cytology & Andrology. This will include Mortuary Services when deputising for Head of Technical Services.
•    To liaise with the Head of Technical Services in planning long term strategy that provides a Pathology service for the organisation and ensures contingencies are in place that maintain the service and take account of uncertainty within the changing environment.
•    As a member of the Pathology Management Team, the post holder will have a significant role in effecting implementation of plans and strategies.
•    Oversee effective administration of all relevant service matters for NHS GG&C Pathology Service.
•    Responsible for the interpretation and application of NHS, organisational, local and national guidelines and policies. 
•    In conjunction with the Compliance Manager and Head of Technical Services, responsible for the establishment and implementation of service policies and procedures that are required to meet the standards for United Kingdom Accreditation Services (UKAS) or equivalent.
•    To liaise with service users, other departments/services within the NHS GG&C and commercial suppliers/agencies etc. 
•    Professional Lead and line manager for Healthcare Scientists, managers and related staff for the Pathology service. This encompasses responsibility for recruitment, staff development, continuing education, training, discipline, performance appraisal and CPD.
•    The post holder will work with and consult the Lead Medical Consultant and Head of Technical Services and keep them informed of relevant service issues.
•    To maintain an awareness of technical, equipment and product developments within the field, and to advise medical and other staff of their possible implications for the service.
•    Ensures that the resources and facilities required for efficient provision of service are maintained
•    Deputise for Head of Technical Services when required, participating in appropriate business and other relevant meetings to represent the departmental interest to ensure awareness of NHS Scotland, Divisional, Directorate priorities and policies.


The post holder requires the following:-

•    Appropriate State Registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist is mandatory
•    Healthcare Science Masters Degree (MSc) or IBMS Fellowship plus further professional training, development and experience to doctorate or equivalent level. 
•    The post holder should hold a Management qualification or demonstrable equivalent knowledge through management training. 
•    The post holder should be able to demonstrate high level leadership and people management skills commensurate with level 4 of the Knowledge and Skills Framework       dimension G6 (People Management)
•    Extensive scientific/technical knowledge of and experience in Pathology.
•    Extensive experience as Healthcare Scientist with demonstrable significant experience in Laboratory Management.
•    Demonstrate quality leadership with good planning and organisational skills
•    Demonstrate high level of competence in meeting deadlines, problem solving and prioritising workloads.
•    Evidence of continuing professional development to maintain pathological and management knowledge and awareness of scientific/technical developments within the service. The post holder must keep up to date by reading, attending courses, scientific seminars/conferences/training and management refresher courses
•    Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
•    Advanced IT skills including expertise in Microsoft Office to manipulate information/data and produce reports and statistical analysis.
•    Have high level personnel skills required to act as Professional lead for all biomedical scientists and related staff, including staff recruitment, staff supervision, change management and performance appraisal.
•    The post-holder is expected to have the knowledge and expertise to effectively manage the budget for their service subdivision to meet the organisation’s financial requirements.
The shift pattern is; Monday – Friday (09:00-1700)
