Job Advert
National Managed Service Network for
Children and Young People with Cancer
National Clinical Director
2 year fixed term
Up to 4 sessions / PAs per week
Following the publication in 2009 of ‘Better Health, Better Care – A National Delivery Plan for Children and Young People’s Specialist Services in Scotland’, a new service model for the delivery of specialist health services for all children in Scotland was confirmed. In designing the new service model, the Scottish Government established a Managed Service Network for Children and Young People with Cancer (MSN CYPC).
The first national children and young people’s cancer plan was published by the MSN CYPC and the Scottish Government in 2012, followed by a second in 2016. Our first NHS Scotland cancer strategy for children and young people “Collaborative and Compassionate Cancer Care” was launched by the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care in September. The strategy highlights Scotland’s priorities for the next five years and provides clear obtainable aims to support the very best clinical outcomes, whilst putting the needs of the patient and their loved ones at the centre of their care.
This is an exciting, but challenging time for children and young people’s cancer services, in light of the increasing political interest in the provision of these services and a developing policy context. As a key step in enhancing the leadership of the strategy’s implementation, the MSN CYPC is seeking to appoint a National Clinical Director to provide the necessary clinical expertise, strategic clinical leadership and direction to support the future development of children and young people’s cancer services.
The National Clinical Director will champion children and young people’s cancer services and the national networking approaches on behalf of the MSN CYPC. This role is crucial to the development and sustainability of national working. The post holder will chair the MSN CYPC National Operational Delivery Group, MSN CYPC National Clinical Governance Group and represent the MSN CYPC on national working groups and relevant meetings. The National Clinical Director will work closely with the National Network Manager in the further evolution and development of the MSN CYPC.
The successful post holder should have both the knowledge and skills to credibly champion the cause of the MSN CYPC across NHS Scotland. You will have strong communication and interpersonal skills. You will be able to demonstrate skill in leading and promoting collaboration across organisational and professional boundaries and have a deep understanding of the complexities of delivering cancer services to children and young people. The appointment will be made on a secondment basis for a fixed term period of two years, in the first instance, with the possibility of extending for a further two years.

Interviews will be held on Wednesday 8th December 2021 in the morning. Due to the ongoing COVID situation, interviews will be held via Microsoft Teams. Please also note that it is the responsibility of each applicant to obtain written approval from their current employer, ahead of submitting an application, that they will be fully supported to undertake this additional activity.
