RURAL EMERGENCY PHYSICIANS / SPECIALIST DOCTOR in UNPLANNED & ACUTE CARE
SPECIALTY DOCTOR GRADE £63,187 - £94,311 per annum
Distant Island Allowance £1,117 per annum

Applicants must be on the GMC register with a license to Practice, with at least 4 years postgraduate experience that must include General Practice or Emergency Medicine. The introduction of the Rural Emergency Physician post is an exciting opportunity to contribute to this development. All jobs will be Hospital based working in the Emergency Department and on base wards, but also include our community & primary care teams delivering unplanned care throughout the Western Isles. Initially posts will cover Uist&Barra and St Brendan’s Hospitals, with the inclusion of the Western Isles Hospital at a later date.
St Brendans Brendan’s Community Hospital has 3 (+2) inpatient beds, outpatient facilities and a small emergency room. The REP will provide 24/7 cover for the Hospital and for all unplanned care on the islands of Barra & Vatersay (population ~1600), working in close collaboration with the Castlebay Medical Practice. Advanced (nurse) practitioners will also be based at the Hospital.
Uist & Barra Hospital has 17 (+3) inpatient beds, with outpatient (and emergency department) and endoscopy facilities and a resuscitation room. The REP will provide 24/7 medical cover for the Hospital inpatients and ED attendances and all unplanned healthcare needs for the residents (~4500 population). Advanced (nurse) practitioners will also be based at the Hospital.
The Western Isles Hospital is a modern 97-bed rural General Hospital, providing the main ED for the Islands. The REP will be based in the ED (~5500 attendances per annum, with a population of ~21k) providing 24/7 cover for the Department and NHS24 referrals for the Island chain. This will include triage and directing community staff, indirect patient assessment and acting as the focal point for all unplanned care delivery on the Western Isles.
The post holder will have 24/7 support from the consultant teams based at WIH Stornoway, and also with our mainland colleagues including the Emergency Retrieval Teams.
Terms and Conditions of the New Specialty Doctor Grade (Scotland) 2004 apply. The post is for 10 Pas per week plus up to a maximum of 2 EPAs per week and a 6% availability allowance may be available depending on job plan.

The successful applicant will be required to register with the PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) Scheme.
