Specialist Biomedical Scientist/Trainee

Band 6 [Annex 21 (Paragraph 2) for Trainee position]


We are looking for a conscientious individual who is a good team player to work within this busy but friendly department. You will be expected to rotate through the different sections of the department, which will require multi-tasking skills and the ability to retain a variety different processes and knowledge to cope with the diversity of the tasks required. This will follow extensive training and completion of competence based assessments. You will have the opportunity to work in Immunohistochemistry, Electron Microscopy, Mohs Surgery Clinics and routine Histopathology sections.

We are a progressive, expanding teaching hospital department with an annual workload of approx 30,000 surgical pathology specimen and 2,000 diagnostic cytology cases.  The base is at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.

Dundee is known as the ‘City of Discovery’ and also as ‘Scotland’s Coolest City’ for its culture, which includes the spectacular new V&A design museum on Dundee’s Riverside.


This challenging post will require applications from individuals holding an IBMS Accredited Honours Degree in Biomedical Science, be HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist, and have an IBMS post-registration Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology or equivalent. The Pathology Department are committed to Continued Professional Development.


Consideration will also be given to applicants with the following

  • Those with an IBMS Accredited BSc(Hons) in Biomedical Science and who are registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist but have not yet completed the IBMS specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology. This post will subsequently be considered as a training post (Band 6 Annex 21)

On appointment the post holder must achieve the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology within 2 years


  • Those with an IBMS Accredited BSc(Hons) in Biomedical Science who have not yet completed the IBMS Registration Portfolio.

This post will subsequently be considered as training post (Band 6 Annex 21)

On appointment the post holder must complete the IBMS Registration Portfolio to gain the certificate of competence and become registered with the HCPC as Biomedical Scientist within 1 year. Following this, they must then achieve the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology within 2 years thereafter.


The Department is a UKAS accredited medical laboratory No. 8682, and has IBMS Training Approval Status for pre and post registration training.
