NHS HIGHLAND

RAIGMORE ,

CONSULTANT GASTROENTEROLOGISTS (x2) 10PA (with the options for additional PAs or consideration of less than full time)

Surrounded by the beauty, history and lifestyle opportunities of the Highlands, but well connected by rail and to major hubs by air, it shouldn’t be surprising that Inverness is Scotland’s fastest growing city. We are inviting applications from consultant gastroenterologist(s) to expand our existing team of 3.4 FTE consultant gastroenterologists, 9 specialist nurses across IBD, liver, viral hepatitis and nutrition, 2.5 specialist dietitians, GI Pharmacist and (soon to be appointed) clinical psychologist.

NHS Highland serves a population of around 320,000, dispersed through 40% of the land area of Scotland. Our remote and rural geography informs the structure of our service. Secondary healthcare is provided by Raigmore (district general) Hospital in Inverness, rural general hospitals (RGHs) in Wick, Fort William and Oban and a network of community hospitals. We provide a comprehensive gastroenterology, hepatology and clinical nutrition service, using technological and collaborative solutions to deliver care in settings appropriate to patients’ needs.

We were early adopters of remote consultation – NHS Near Me virtual consultation was developed with patients in Caithness. Our inflammatory bowel disease team won a SAGE award in 2016 for its multidisciplinary working and the GI service piloted the use of colon capsule endoscopy, now being adopted across Scotland. We are part of the North of Scotland Cancer Network, linking Highland, Grampian, Tayside and the Island health boards.

The posts are based in Inverness and include care of inpatients on the shared gastroenterology and renal ward. Acute medical take is not expected to be part of these posts but is available for those who wish to do so. Our 4-room endoscopy suite provides opportunities for advanced endoscopy including endoscopic ultrasound.

We are keen to accommodate specialist interests and dedicated research sessions are available for suitable candidates through our links with Aberdeen University. Flexible working including less than full time can be negotiated, as can participation in the NHS Scotland Global Citizenship Programme, which aims to support NHS staff who wish to undertake overseas work in low or middle-income countries (LMIs).

Applicants are welcome to visit and we would strongly encourage those that are shortlisted to ensure they have spoken to the informal contacts and other relevant senior colleagues. You can ask for a Teams meeting to be set up through the department contact.

Interviews will be held via Microsoft Teams. Informal enquiries will be welcomed by Dr Neil Jamieson (neil.jamieson2@nhs.scot) 01463 705755, Consultant Gastroenterologist or Dr Hazel Younger, Consultant Gastroenterologist hazel.younger@nhs.scot 01463 705442.
