POST: CONSULTANT IN PAEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE MEDICINE AND TRANSPORT

BASE: ROYAL HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN, GLASGOW

Applications are invited for a Consultant post in Paediatric Intensive Care at the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC) Glasgow ScotSTAR sessions.

It is an exciting time for Children’s Services within Greater Glasgow & Clyde for the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC) which lies within the South Glasgow Tri-Hospital campus. RHC is one the largest children’s hospitals in the UK and unique within Scotland. The PICU has 22 flexible critical care beds and admits approximately 1100 patients per year. An extensive range of paediatric sub-specialties is provided for which includes congenital heart disease surgery, interventional cardiology, ECMO / Ventricular Assist Devices, complex airway surgery, neuro-surgery, trauma, oncology, stem cell transplantation, renal transplantation, immuno-deficiencies and metabolic medicine. The intensive care team collaborates with the amalgamated Scottish retrieval service (ScotSTAR) to provide advice, support and the transfer of critically ill children by road or air (helicopter / fixed wing) throughout Scotland including many remote and rural locations.

The successful applicant will join 14 consultant colleagues. The Paediatric intensive care unit benefits from a strong, ambitious and dedicated team, supported by management that is keen to embrace vision and promote the reputation of the hospital. The unit is busy, continually running on a very high occupancy rate with high acuity patients. Consultants are supported by junior medical staff comprising middle grade paediatric trainees, PICU National Grid trainees and post CCT anaesthetic and international trainees. The pursuits of collaborative personal interests that compliment the unit’s comprehensive strategic service development are encouraged. The hospital has a strong traditional academic / teaching relationship and many consultant staff hold Honorary contracts with the University of Glasgow.

Glasgow is an exciting and vibrant city with close proximity to the great outdoors and has hosted the Commonwealth games, Ryder Cup celebrations, Euro-ELSO, the MTV awards and most recently COP26. It has an excellent transport infrastructure facilitating easy travel both home and abroad.

Applicants should possess full GMC and a licence to practice. Postgraduate qualification (MRCPCH or FRCA equivalent) and have undertaken accredited training in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of Interview.
