External/Advertised Job Title: Service Designer NHS Education for Scotland (FTC Until 31/03/2024 Months).

Pay grade: NHS Band 7, £40,872 to £47,846 per annum (pro rata).

Work pattern: Fixed term Full Time, 37.5 hours per week - we are happy to consider applicants seeking reduced working hours down to 80% / 30 hours per week.

Fixed term/Secondment until 31/03/2024

SLA or secondment only for NHS staff in the first instance.

We are looking for a Service Designer to join our small, but highly talented and growing design team to collaborate and problem-solve some of the most complex challenges in health and social care.

You will have the opportunity to design and deliver work that will directly inform the development and delivery of digital services for health and care professionals, and the general public.

About us:

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is an education and training body and a special health board within NHS Scotland, with responsibility of developing and delivering education and training for the healthcare workforce in Scotland.

The functions of the NES Digital Group are to develop and lead a programme of work and services that support the corporate functions that allow NES to work and deliver its strategic objectives. Digital has been formed with the specific objective of consolidating NES’ information based expertise into a professional, focused centre for information and technical excellence.

Its aim is to create a strategic programme for the transformation of digital based services to allow NES to become a leading digital organisation in Scottish Health, Digital by Default and fully aligned with the Scottish Government’s Health & Care strategy.


About you:

As a service designer:

  • You will have significant experience as a designer developing services and/or products.
  • You have a clear understanding of agile methodology and the ability to work within a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • You can listen and communicate effectively, being proactive and reactive, and know how to make complex, technical information and language simple for diverse senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • You can influence, motivate, and collaborate with team members.
  • You can demonstrate a knowledge of technology, and data principles.
  • You are highly experienced in evidence-based design and can turn complex information into simple designs.
  • You can collaboratively prototype whilst being confident in establish design patterns and iterate them.
  • You can confidently lead and facilitate design discussions to identify user needs by defining appropriate approaches to engagement whilst advocating for the Scottish Approach to Service Design.

You may be returning from a career break (e.g., maternity, paternity, caring for others) or returning to Service Design after working in another field.  Your experiences elsewhere can bring a fresh perspective to our work.
