Salaried GP in Rural Practice

PART TIME 25 hours per week FIXED TERM

From 1st November 2021 to 31st October 2022

with a possible permanent position becoming available

We have an exciting opportunity to join our GP team in one of the most beautiful and popular locations in the Highlands of Scotland. Based in Carbost, Isle of Skye. our rather unique remote and rural practice strives to offer a modern, high standard of medicine while maintaining a traditional family doctor role.  Although based in a rural location, we have unparalleled support from the local hospital in Broadford just 25 miles away and consultant clinics either there or on NearMe.  Out of hours GP access is covered by the Rural Support team based at both Portree and Broadford hospitals so there is no requirement for any OOH work with this post.  We are looking for flexible ways to balance the work and life style choices that many professional people are looking for nowadays.  Hours are usually rotared two full days one week 3 full days the next. However, being a close knit team and to ensure smooth runing of the Practice a weekly handover occurs every Wednesday between the two GPs and so on the alternate Wednesday off rota – a one or two hour slot is required either in person or on TEAMS which would be paid as extra hours.

Carbost Medical Practice is a dispensing practice covering approximately 650 patients who are scattered across a wide geographical area with a large influx of Temporary Residents during the tourist summer season (generally Easter – Oct)  Being a small practice, gives us the priviledge to get to know most of our patients very well.  Our team consists of two part time salaried GPs, two experienced part time  Dispenser/receptionists, one part time Health Care Assistant/receptionist, one part time Practice Manager (who also covers the South Skye Practices). We  have Excellent nursing input from the team of District/community nurses based in Dunvegan who come to the Practice three times a week and at other times to help manage our housebound patients or any wound dressings etc at the Practice. We have a regular visiting Community Pharmacist, Direct Access Physiotherapist and monthly Podiatrist. We also have great support from a MacMillan Specialist Nurse and the Midwifery service based at Portree Hospital. The Community Mental Health team (CMHT) has CPNs and a MHO who provide input for serious mental health problems, drug and alcohol intervention, old age psychiatry and acute crisis responce support. There is also support from the Children and Families Mental Health team and community paediatrics.

We are a close knit Practice team and as well as our regular practice meetings (currently mostly via TEAMS), the GP and staff member on, will meet for lunch every day (Covid rules pertaining). Although we are a salaried practice we are fully supported by NHS Highland in changing and shaping good primary care organisation and delivering high quailty first class individualised patient care. There is a regular cluster group which meets with all practices (GMS and PMS) across Skye and Lochalsh for quality improvement as well as peer support.

GPs have a 10 hour day covering 8am – 6pm as there is no out of hour’s commitment. We are able to give the luxury of time to our patients, offering 15 minute appointments in daily morning surgeries – whether by phone, NearMe or Face to Face (F2F).  Additional clinics are in the afternoon as required. We do regular house visits when needed and  we do all our baby immunisations and 6-8 week health checks as well as smears.   One GP also does all the joint injections as an enhanced service and both provide a minor injury service. More significant injuries are referred onto Broadford Hospital. Because of our location and time from hospital care being at least 30 minutes, we are first responders for BASICS and trained in pre- hospital care for trauma and medical emergencies, including thrombolysis. Good quality palliative care is also very much part of our working ethos. We are therefore able to give high quality care to our patients and a high level of job satisfaction to our doctors. You will ideally be experienced in skills such as pre-hospital care, (BASICS) ALS, PLS and palliative care.

The Practice reception is closed on a Wednesday afternoon which is when Practice and handover meetings are held.  The GP remains on duty until 6pm to see any urgent patients and complete administrative tasks (letters etc). Dispensing is an integral part of the Practice and we have Dispense IT software to allow the GP and staff to safely dispense when they are on their own.

Becoming part of this friendly and co-operative team will offer you the exciting opportunity to work in a stunning location and embrace the unique challenges and opportunities presented by rural practice. You will be working as part of an extended team of professionals including the Scottish Ambulance Service, RNLI Coastguards, Fire and Rescue Services and Mountain Rescue.

With its link to the mainland by bridge, the Isle of Skye is accessible and offers a huge range of outdoor sporting activities, eating options including Michelin star restaurants, art events and great primary schools and secondary education.  Wildlife is in abundance, with regular sightings of deer, sea and golden eagles, otters and sometimes whales and dolphins.

Whether you are currently coming towards the end of your training, looking for a rewarding career opportunity, or a ‘taster’ period in remote and rural healthcare before making more permanent career choices, please contact us for an informal chat, to find out more about this exciting team and discuss this opportunity.
