The NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, West of Scotland Specialist Virology Centre (WOSSVC) is delivered from Level 5, New Lister Building, Glasgow Royal Infirmary The laboratories provide a full and comprehensive Virology service to the population of Greater Glasgow & Clyde, hospital based users e.g. medical, nursing, estates, pharmacy and other department staff e.g. , users in Primary Care and General Practice. The service also provides a Virology referral service to health boards in the West of Scotland and in some instances to health boards in NHS Scotland.
Clinical Support Workers duties include the collection and preparation of materials and clinical specimens for analysis, including the safe disposal of clinical waste. They register patient related information onto the Laboratory Information System or other manual systems. They are responsible for working within Specimen Reception and dealing with telephone queries from staff from other departments and external agencies. They will provide assistance to the Biomedical Scientist for provision of the laboratory service and perform specific laboratory tests as required.
Applicants require 3 Highers at Grade C or above (one of which should include either Chemistry or Biology together with Maths) or SVQ3 in relevant science subject or equivalent qualification, or completion of modern apprenticeship in life sciences, or completion of equivalent accredited education / learning.
The post is a temporary fixed term post for 12 months to support the Virology service during the COVID pandemic and preference will be given to applicants who can evidence recent applicable experience with experience of GG&C Laboratory Medicine procedures including specimen reception and processing desirable.
A contractual out of hours / shift service operates, where the post holder will have compulsory participation in an out of hours’ arrangement under the “Provision of Round the Clock Laboratory Services Agreement”. The post will participate fully in the rota involving working 37.5 hours per week over 7 days, including evenings weekends, public holidays and nights i.e. working between 8pm and 8am.
The post is based at the West Regional Covid Testing Hub at the SNBTS Glasgow Clinical Laboratory Building at 25 Shelley Road, Glasgow, G12 0XB, located within the Gartnavel General Hospital campus. The West Regional Covid Testing Hub Laboratory is part of the NHS GG&C West of Scotland Specialist Virology Service.
