Why work for us?

Patients are at the centre of everything we do in our daily working lives at NHS Borders ensuring they are safe, cared for efficiently, effectively by suitably experienced and qualified staff driving quality at the heart of patient care. We are a dynamic and forward thinking team with a wealth of clinical and leadership experience.  We aim for an open and honest culture and believe in nurturing future stars in NHS.

Borders General Hospital is a modern and well-equipped 284 bed DGH serving the rural Borders area in South East Scotland, approximately 36 miles from Edinburgh.  After an absence of almost 50 years, the Borders Railway has now opened, with train services to central Edinburgh running every thirty minutes (journey time 50 minutes approx).  Tweedbank Station is a few minutes walk from the Borders General Hospital.  On opening the railway Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth said "The Borders railway brings so much promise for sharing and invigorating this most beautiful countryside as a place to work, live and enjoy”.

Recently MELROSE has taken the title of the best place to live in Scotland in a new national ranking - https://www.sundaypost.com/fp/borders-town-of-melrose-named-best-place-to-live-in-scotland/

A relocation package/assistance with temporary accommodation in the local area is available for the successful candidate(s).

The Role

Like the idea of practicing Dermatology in a District General Hospital; in a beautiful rural area with no on-call commitment, sub specialty opportunities and strong links with a near-by tertiary centre.    At least one full-time, or part-time, Consultant Dermatologist post are available at Borders General Hospital, MELROSE.

You would complement the planned team of 1.8 Consultant Dermatologists. The wider clinical team also includes two Salaried GPs with a special interest in Dermatology; as well as an extremely experienced and highly trained nursing team: two of whom are prescribers and two of whom are surgically trained. This robust team is proud to provide a high quality comprehensive Dermatology service to the local population of 113,000 in the Scottish Borders.

You would be joining the team at an extremely exciting time where there is service investment and development.  We have strong links with neighbouring Dermatology Departments from Fife and Lothian: all meeting together on a weekly basis for CPD, complex case discussions and CPC meetings. You would be encouraged to partake in this hugely valuable, collaborative and educational and supportive forum.

Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council in the Specialist Register for Dermatology before taking up the post or be within 6 months of expected date of obtaining CCT or equivalent.  You must possess the MRCP or equivalent certificate.

We welcome informal discussions, please contact Lynn McCallum, Medical Director - lynn.mccallum@borders.scot.nhs.uk

Closing date for applications: 04 February 2022
