An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Mental Health Directorate for a motivated, dynamic and experienced nurse with highly developed clinical and leadership skills to be considered for the role of Forensic Mental Health Nurse.

In line with the Specialist Forensic Services (SFS), the post holder will be responsible for the direct provision of specialist nursing care and treatment for individuals who have a mental disorder or learning disability, who have demonstrated serious offending behaviour or present a significant risk to themselves or others and indirectly to referring agents. This will be provided through forensic risk assessment, forensic clinical assessment, forensic risk management and risk reduction. The post holder will also provide specialist forensic treatment interventions and training as part of NHS Dumfries and Galloway’s response to the public safety agenda.
The post will provide consultation across the partnership and third sector providers however, the post holder will be expected to hold a small case load and will need to be reactive and respond in a timely manner to any concerns that are identified within the locality due to the acuity and risk that the patients present with.

The post holder will work in collaboration with psychiatry and psychology in order to provide a single point of entry to the specialist forensic service. Working as part of a multi disciplinary team they will provide care through a patient focussed approach to support the individual’s rehabilitation potential. 

The post will be pivotal in driving forward innovation and new practices within the specialist forensic service. You will have a good working knowledge of relevant Mental Health legislation, Care Programme Approach (CPA) and legislative frameworks relevant to Mental Health, Criminal Procedures, Public Protection, knowledge of current physical and psychological treatments in mental health and understand the political environment and integration agenda. 

The post holder will have a requirement to contribute to MAPPA level 3 cases as required.

The post covers Dumfries and Galloway, therefore the ability to travel independently across the region is essential.

This post will require the successful applicant to have/obtain PVG Clearance.
