General Adult Psychiatry
Reference: CG2305
NHS Lothian is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best.
To this end, NHS Lothian welcomes applications from all sections of society.
Applications are welcome for the above Fixed Term, full time (40 hours per week) post based in the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.
Edinburgh Adult Mental Health Services are separated into North and South Edinburgh areas, having community mental health and acute/unscheduled care components. Consultant psychiatrists work within one of these broad functional areas. Community based consultants are currently aligned to CMHT structures mapping onto GP practice catchment populations.
These are new posts intended to support the existing consultants in providing quality patient care within the inpatient units. The General Adult inpatient wards covering Edinburgh are all situated in the new Royal Edinburgh Building. There are 2 female wards and 2 male wards. The North wards are Balcarres and Craiglockhart, the South Meadows and Merchiston and the fifth ward is Braids. All the wards have a multidisciplinary team including Nursing staff, Occupational Therapists, and Art Therapy and Psychology input; the postholder will be expected to work alongside these other professionals to deliver a holistic treatment plan for each patient.
There is an emphasis on service development across the acute wards with a focus on providing a therapeutic environment including patient safety, meaningful activity and carer involvement. There are several ongoing Quality Improvement Projects related to this and the postholder would be expected to become actively involved in the projects associated with their wards. There is scope to develop further projects and coaching available by the Mental Health Quality Improvement Team.
The role of the Specialty Doctor in the team is to, along with the 2 consultants, provide senior psychiatric input for people who are admitted to the inpatient unit. This input will be across both the sectors (e.g. SE and SW) on an equal basis but may vary depending on the need for cover and the demands of the service.
