Job Advert

The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary seeks to appoint enthusiastic individuals to train and work in the Critical Care Unit within Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. Suitable candidates will have completed their Foundation Programme as a minimum but no specific Critical Care training is required. This post would suit a junior doctor who wished to gain Critical Care skills and experience as part of a training in any specialty but may be particularly suitable for those planning to enter training in an Acute Specialty. These posts were created in 2021 to contribute to a more robust critical care provision with anticipated ongoing workload due to Covid-19 and to facilitate moving to a closed Critical Care Unit model from August 2022.

This is a full time position with up to 48hr per week available. Applications for part time work are also welcomed. 8hr per week will be ‘ring fenced’ for Development time. The content of this is negotiable but may include educational, research, audit and Quality Improvement activities and time spent in other acute specialties in particular Anaesthesia and Emergency Medicine.

The successful candidates will have daytime sessions in the Critical Care Unit and will participate in the 1:6 resident out of hours rota. There is an Anaesthetic Trainee or a Specialty Dr allocated to the Critical Care unit 24/7 with a high consultant presence so therefore an excellent level of supervision.

The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care medicine is housed in purpose designed offices alongside the 17 bed Critical Care Unit and adjacent to our Operating Theatre complex. There is a large open plan office for trainees which is also the social hub of the Department due to the beverage facilities and outstanding views! Single ‘hot desk’ rooms are also available for private study. The new Hospital was opened in December 2017 and is very well equipped with much of the design being influenced by members of the Department. There is a well equipped Education Centre as well as excellent educational facilities within the Department.

The Critical Care Unit is a 17 bed combined Intensive Care and High dependency unit with  100% single rooms. It is very well equipped, currently with Excel ventilators, Philips monitoring and Oesophageal Doppler; PICCO; ultrasound and echocardiography available. Multi-modality renal support is used with excellent support from the renal unit. The Philips ICCA system is a fully integrated multi disciplinary electronic patient record.

The Critical Care Unit usually runs a closed model for level 3 and selected level 2 patients and is staffed by six Consultants with an interest in Critical Care on a ‘week at a time’ daytime rota. The low acuity Level 2 and Level 1 patients have been run as an open model. During the Covid pandemic we have run the whole unit as a closed unit and these posts are intended to provide staffing to move to a sustainable closed model from August 2022.

The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine has a regular commitment to teaching Glasgow students in their 3rd and 4th year and ScotGEM students in their 2nd and 3rd years (ScotGEM is a 4 year postgraduate degree run by St Andrews and Dundee that is based mainly in primary care with secondary care ‘bursts’). The Dumfries undergraduate teaching programme is highly rated by our students whose feedback places us right at the top of the West of Scotland teaching league table in Surgery (including Anaesthesia), Medicine and Emergency Medicine. In addition the Department participates in training programmes for Foundation doctors including teaching practical skills and has several students and junior doctors joining us for taster weeks. We run a monthly half day educational meeting for the department and there is an educational programme of scenarios and M&M meetings for the Theatre and Critical Care staff. PLS, APLS, ALS and ALERT courses are run in house and there are opportunities to teach for suitably qualified individuals.

The Department has a long history of contributing to Multi Centre research with a high recruitment rate. We are currently Scotland’s third highest contributor (in absolute numbers) to the Recovery COVID-19 trial.

NHS Dumfries and Galloway serves a population of approximately 148,500 within a large geographical area of about 2,400 square miles. Dumfries and Galloway stretches from Langholm in the East to Drummore in the West, and from Kirkconnel and Carsphairn in the North down to Sandyhills on the Solway Coast. The Health Board currently employs around 4500 staff excluding GPs and Dentists.

Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary is a brand new 344 bed state of the art hospital based in Dumfries. It is the main hospital for the region providing a wide range of inpatient and outpatient health services.  The Galloway Community Hospital serves Stranraer and the west of the region; it is an intermediate unit providing maternity services, as well as medical & surgical beds.  There are bedded units within eight cottage hospitals which provide care services such as minor injuries units.  Midpark Hospital provides inpatient facilities for mental health patients.

Dumfries and Galloway is a beautiful and mostly undiscovered part of Scotland.  This post would suit a doctor who enjoys walking, running, cycling, mountain biking and other outdoor activities.  We are only a 90 minute drive away from the Lake District.  We are close enough to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Carlisle for those who also appreciate the bright lights and city life.

The salary will be £34,901 - £54,879.

Accommodation will be available.
