The Operations Manager will be responsible for managing the day to day operations of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGG&C) Mortuary Services. This includes managing activities at the main Mortuary facility in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and at satellite body stores in Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Gartnavel General Hospital, Royal Alexandria Hospital, Inverclyde Royal Hospital and Vale of Leven Hospital. NHSGG&C also provides Mortuary services, resources and facilities to the Crown Office Procurator Fiscal Services (COPFS) and Police Scotland, within a defined geographical location.
The Operations Manager will ensure robust systems are maintained for effective receipt, storage and release of adult and paediatric deceased. The workload is approximately 9,500-10,000 deceased per annum and arises from hospital sites, and also from deaths in the community. The Mortuary Manager also for oversees effective scheduling of post mortem activities for approximately 2,500 COPFS cases per annum, (including 50 paediatric cases) and 350-400 NHS cases per annum (the majority being paediatric cases).
The Operations Manager is responsible for managing all staff, equipment and consumable resources associated with provision of the above service. Key skills required include organisational and planning skills, strong communication skills including the ability to display tact, empathy and sensitivity, and demonstrable supervisory/staff management skills.
The post holder requires the following:-
• Qualified to degree level in a relevant science subject, or to Diploma level in Anatomical Pathology Technology (RSPH Diploma Level 4 or equivalent qualification or equivalent demonstrable knowledge gained through training and experience)
• Post-graduate (equivalent) level management knowledge gained through completion of a formal management qualification or equivalent evidence of management knowledge through experience
• Management experience at senior level, including experience of staff training, staff supervision and mentoring.
• Significant demonstrable operational management experience of a Mortuary service is desirable
• Excellent time management, planning and organisational skills to enable post holder to manage their workload in an efficient and effective manner; to delegate work as required and to make adjustments to people and processes where necessary so that the resources within the department are used effectively to ensure delivery of service that meets user needs.
• Demonstrate high level of competence in meeting deadlines, problem solving and prioritising workloads.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to communicate complex or sensitive information to a wide range of individuals as required.
• Have the personnel skills required to act as lead for mortuary staff including staff recruitment, staff supervision, and change management and performance appraisal.
• Possess a high level of leadership and people management skills and be able to delegate effectively together with good planning and organisational skills.
