Job Advert

University Hospitals, Crosshouse and Ayr are large district general hospitals based in Ayrshire, central Scotland. Crosshouse is situated 35 minutes south of Glasgow and Ayr a further 19 miles South. The total catchment population is around 375,000. Funding from Additional Cost of Teaching money has provided this opportunity to continue our commitment to teaching of undergraduate medical students. We wish to appoint of Clinical Teaching Fellows (14 posts) within the department of medicine at both hospital sites. The posts will commence in 3 August 2022.

The Clinical Teaching Fellow will focus on the organisation, development and provision of teaching to undergraduate medical students from Glasgow University. The successful candidates will spend approximately 8-12 hours per week on a mixture of bedside teaching and facilitated tutorials. Pursuit of a qualification in medical education is encouraged and fully funded.

The balance of time will be in clinical practice with protected time for personal development (audit, research and/or completion of certificate course in medical education). In Ayr, the clinical component of the post will be in Acute Medicine with Intensive Care Medicine, Gastroenterology, Respiratory, Endocrine, Cardiology, Rheumatology, and Haematology. In Crosshouse, we can offer clinical experience and learning opportunities in Medical High Dependency, Acute Medicine, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Respiratory, Endocrinology, Renal, Haematology, Acute Stroke, Frailty or Infectious Diseases. It may be possible to support other specialties on request.

All of these posts will contribute to the out-of hours rota in general medicine, which allows the posts to attract a 50% out of hours supplement.   It is not expected that on-call will interfere significantly with day time teaching, clinical or research activities.
These posts are suited to trainees who have satisfactorily completed foundation training or can demonstrate equivalent competencies, and wish to develop skills in medical education or clinical research. The posts would also be highly suited to any candidate who has completed core medical training or Stage 1 internal medicine training and wishes to develop sub-specialty experience and improve their curriculum vitae prior to specialty training application. Funding towards a medical education qualification (for example, a post graduate certificate in medical education) will be made available. Alternatively successful candidates may opt to undertake their own portfolio of development aligned to their personal needs and career aspirations. Where an appointee decides not to enrol in the certificate course in medical education, up to £1,250 will be made available to support funding of personal development activities, which must be agreed with the Clinical Supervisor/Assistant Director of Medical Education.
For those candidates NOT wishing to undertake a PG cert funding of up to £1250 will be made available to support professional development such as attendances at course.

Please note that these posts do not carry educational approval with the Dean.

Alternatively the post would suit ST3 trainees and above who wish to seek out of programme experience (who should contact their Deanery at the earliest juncture).

You will be fully registered with the GMC with a current Licence to Practice, and must have completed foundation or equivalent training.   Evidence of an interest in, and an aptitude for teaching would be advantageous.

Informal enquiries may be made to Dr David Wilkin (Assistant Director of Medical Education at Crosshouse), Dr Jane Collie (Assistant Director of Medical Education at Crosshouse) tel: 01563 521133, Dr Derek Mclaughlan (Assistant Director of Medical Education, University Hospital Ayr) tel: 01292 614766 or Dr Hugh Neill (Director of Medical Education) tel: 01563 527537.

Closing date: 31 March 2022
Interviews: provisionally scheduled for w/c 25th April 2022.
