Following the publication in 2009 of ‘Better Health, Better Care – A National Delivery Plan for Children and Young People’s Specialist Services in Scotland’, a new service model for the delivery of specialist health services for all children in Scotland was confirmed. In designing the new service model, the Scottish Government established a national Managed Service Network for Children and Young People with Cancer (MSN CYPC).
The first national children and young people’s cancer plan was published by the MSN CYPC and the Scottish Government in 2012, followed by a second in 2016. Our first NHS Scotland cancer strategy for children and young people “Collaborative and Compassionate Cancer Care” was launched by the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care in September 2021. The strategy highlights Scotland’s priorities for the next five years and provides clear obtainable aims to support the very best clinical outcomes, whilst putting the needs of the patient and their loved ones at the centre of their care.
This is an exciting, but challenging time for children and young people’s cancer services, in light of the increasing political interest in the provision of these services and a developing policy context. As a key step in enhancing the leadership of the strategy’s implementation, the MSN CYPC is seeking to appoint a National Network Manager to facilitate, plan and support strategic national service change and redesign to deliver the objectives of the new children and young people’s cancer strategy. The work is exciting, innovative and complex.
The MSN CYPC and its national team need to work across traditional Health Board boundaries, collaborating with colleagues and key stakeholders across Scotland on a very regular basis. This is an opportunity to become a part of a responsive and dynamic network. Applications are welcomed from suitably qualified and experienced people with the leadership ability and skills needed to support implementation of this and future cancer strategies.
Excellent interpersonal, communication and analytical skills, a high level of political and self-awareness and ability to work in a complex and changing environment are necessary. Experience of managing multiple projects within a complex environment to a successful conclusion is vital. The applicant must have experience of working across geographic boundaries and with a wide range of people at strategic and operational level. Knowledge and experience of working at a national level is desirable.
You will be required to achieve the mandatory Induction standards for Healthcare Support Workers in Scotland and to comply with the Code of Conduct throughout your employment.
