An opportunity for a  Head of Nuclear Medicine has arisen within the Nuclear Medicine Department  based in the University Hospital Monklands .

This vacancy is  for a permanent  Band 8c , full time, 37.5 hr position which would require the successful candidate to work a shift pattern of  Monday to Friday - 9am - 5pm.

It is the intention that the postholder will work closely with colleagues from Imaging Physics in NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde to improve the level of resilience and sustainability within NHS Lanarkshire Nuclear Medicine Service and also the Nuclear Medicine profession across the West of Scotland. This close working relationship will also provide the post holder with a wider breadth of experience and support within a larger team.

The post holder is responsible for:

The delivery and development of a comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic Nuclear Medicine service for patients throughout Lanarkshire.  This includes both financial and staff management.

The provision of expert scientific advice on the use of a wide range of ionising and non-ionising radiations in NHS Lanarkshire.  This includes risk management and clinical governance issues related to the use of radioactive pharmaceuticals in Nuclear Medicine, and the use of x-rays, lasers and ultraviolet radiation.

Participation in the management of Health and Safety including ionising radiation safety.

Participation in the development of Board policy with respect to the use of ionising and non-ionising radiation.

Administering the policy for entitling non-medical referrers to request ionising radiation studies.

The successful candidate will have the following skills & attributes :

  • Honours degree (1st or 2nd class) in physics or engineering.
  • PhD in Medical Physics (or MSc and equivalent level of additional knowledge and experience).
  • IPEM Certificate of completion of Post-qualification Higher Training or equivalent (eg Corporate Membership of IPEM).
  • Registration as a Clinical Scientist by the Health and Care Professions Council.
  • Participation in the IPEM Continuing Professional Development scheme and ensure that the criteria are met.
  • Experience and advanced training in Nuclear Medicine.
  • Experience in the provision of advice to consultant radiologists and other professional staff.
  • Sufficient knowledge and experience to act as a Radiation Protection Supervisor and Medical Physics Expert under IRR 2017  and IR(ME)R  2017 within the field of Nuclear Medicine.
  • Specialist training on and practical experience in the use and evaluation of a wide range of Nuclear Medicine equipment and computer applications.
  • Record of publications/presentations in Nuclear Medicine.
  • Specialised knowledge of wider clinical issues and their implications for Nuclear Medicine diagnosis and therapy e.g. SIGN Guidelines.
  • Knowledge of the use of ionising and non-ionising radiation in healthcare.
  • High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment and procedural failures.
  • Detailed working understanding and implementation of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines, including: IRR 2017, IR(ME)R 2017, ISO 9001:2015. Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations 2018
  • Knowledge of national policies and initiatives in imaging services.
  • Participation in national activities related to Nuclear Medicine.
  • Experience of quality systems.
  • Ability to deliver teaching and training on complex subjects.
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance.

   Desirable

   Chartered Physicist /Scientist (CPhys/CSci).

   Experience of mentoring/coordinating training of staff.

   Management training.
