The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and St John’s Hospitals
RIE Department of Clinical Microbiology (Bacteriology)
Containment Level 3
Microbiology and National Reference Laboratories (Scottish Mycobacteria Reference Laboratory (SMRL) and Scottish E. coli O157/STEC Reference Laboratory (SERL)
Team Manager – Senior Biomedical Scientist Band 7

Applications are invited from suitably experienced and motivated individuals to fill the role of Team Manager, in this busy and well-equipped Containment Level 3 (CL3) facility. The containment level 3 within the RIE hosts multiple services; Microbiology, Virology, SMRL and SERL.

The CL3 is used for the isolation and identification of Biological Hazard Group 3 pathogens, and a select number of Biological Hazard Group 2 pathogens that may pose a risk to the laboratory staff handling them. The co-location of two National Reference Laboratory services where staff work daily with Biological Hazard Group 3 organisms means that effective safe management of the CL3 is critical. The successful candidate will be responsible for Health and Safety (H&S) documentation including COSHH and Risk assessments, supports maintenance records including sealability testing, LEV and negative pressure processes and records. In addition the lead will support H&S compliance (documentation and audits), training and competence of all staff who use the CL3. The Team Manager will also support general quality associated compliance requirements to support UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation.

The two National reference laboratories testing services support both culture and Whole Genome Sequencing processes and the successful candidate will have opportunities to learn laboratory aspects as well as be trained to authorise results for both National Reference Laboratories. As a band 7 Team Manager the successful candidate will be involved in the day to day running of the lab. Therefore, this post is suited to an individual confident in their decision-making, organisation, communication, management and leadership skills, and evidence of this at band 6 is acceptable.

The line management for the role is to Microbiology Operational Managers; however, the successful candidate will be working daily with two national reference laboratory teams consisting of both Consultant Microbiologists and Clinical Scientists in lead Director roles, supported further by Clinical Scientists, Biomedical Scientists and Associate Practitioners.

The successful candidate will be expected to commence a National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) general certificate and will be supported for this qualification. In addition other relevant H&S associated courses provided by the HSE will be supported. In addition there are possible flexible working opportunities with this role i.e. some days working from home.

Applicants must be HCPC registered, be educated to Masters Level (or equivalent) and have significant, current experience working in a diagnostic Microbiology laboratory at Band 6 level or above.

Candidates must participate in Continuing Professional Development.
