Applications are welcome for the above Permanent, full time (40 hours per week) post based in Royal Infirmary Edinburgh, to join a team of 13 Consultant Microbiologists and 7 Consultant Virologists who provide a service covering the whole of NHS Lothian. The vacancies are based at the Royal Infirmary and Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, with further cover required at St John’s Hospital, Livingston.
We have excellent working relationships with clinical teams and ongoing collaboration with researchers in Edinburgh and beyond. The NHS Lothian Microbiology and Virology services include six Scottish Reference Laboratories dealing with Mycobacteria, E. coli O157/STEC, bacterial STIs, Human Papilloma Virus, viral sequencing and Viral Haemorrhagic Fever as well as a whole range of specialist Microbiology and Virology services. The laboratories have full UKAS ISO 15189:2012 accreditation.
We have formed the NHS Lothian Infection Service (NIS) with colleagues in Virology, Infectious Diseases and Infection Prevention & Control aligning these more closely, in line with national changes in training and service provision. Our goal is to make optimal use of available expertise for delivery of high-quality patient-centred care for patients with, or at risk of, infection in our health board.
The post-holders will have a CCT in Microbiology or Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, or be within 6 months at interview date of achieving this, and be expected to have, or may develop, a special interest in infection prevention & control, clinical education/ training and supervision, and certain clinical areas (for example, in renal medicine at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh). They will have an opportunity to participate in infection ward rounds and an active infection consult service. Other areas of special interest can be accommodated by negotiation. On-call is 1:8-12 pro-rata with prospective cover, with a 5% availability supplement. This is under review.
The vacancies are full-time, but part-time or job-share applicants will be considered. The indicative Job Plans include 9 Programmed Activities (PA) for Direct Clinical Care (DCC; including infection prevention & control) and 1 PA for core Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). Consideration will be given to additional SPA time for clinical education/ training and supervision.
