A vacancy has arisen as a result of retirement of the current incumbent, for an appropriately qualified and skilled individual to join the Public Health Team in the Western Isles.

We have a strong team of Public Health staff covering the range of Public Health practice. The post will focus on child health and immunisation but it will also involve practice across all spheres of public health.

You will also be expected to take part in the Health Protection Out of Hours On-call Rota (currently 1 in 6) on a whole time basis and will have Specialist Registration in Public Health, either through full GMC registration and inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register (Public Health) or be eligible for such inclusion within three months of the interview date; or are equivalently registered or expect to be included within three months of the interview date as a Public Health Specialist on the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR).

The Western Isles is located 40 miles off the North West coast of Scotland, and is 130 miles long from the Butt of Lewis in the North to the Isle of Barra in the South. The population of the Western Isles is approximately 26,500. The Health Board employs over 1,000 staff, excluding GPs and Dentists. There is easy access to the mainland, with regular flights between Stornoway and Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness

The islands are great for walking, surfing, kayaking, kite surfing, sea life cruises, horse riding and even snorkelling with seals or, if you are much more comfortable on (or prefer!) dry land, you can get up into the hills and mountains, or maybe mountain biking might be your thing… or perhaps explore one of Scotland's newest long-distance trails, The Hebridean Way, or follow the recently launched Eat Drink Hebrides Trail. The islands are full of rare and wonderful wildlife including dolphins, whales and golden eagles to name but a few, and are surrounded by breathtaking scenery to calm the mind, the ideal retreat for any outdoors enthusiast.

The Outer Hebrides, also known as the Western Isles is an island chain off the north coast of Scotland. It is made up of more than 70 islands, of which only 15 are inhabited. There is great peace and tranquility with the quality of life throughout our islands, with unspoilt white beaches stretching miles into the distance with stunning coastlines. In fact, it’s no wonder that local beaches have been named among the best in the world.
