This post is a 24 Month Fixed Term / Secondment position.
The National Microbiology Reference Unit (NMRU) is part of the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) with laboratories in the Jack Copland Centre located at the Heriot Watt University campus in Edinburgh. The function of the NMRU is to provide both a frontline screening and confirmatory testing service for departments within the SNBTS as well as other health services in order to maintain the safety of the blood supply and blood products.
A Healthcare Support Worker/Medical Laboratory Assistant is required to support the work of Biomedical Scientists in the NMRU. The post holder will assist in sample reception , booking in and processing donor samples for testing plus other general laboratory duties such as autoclaving and stock management in line with Standard Operating Procedures. Previous experience in a medical laboratory is desirable but not essential. In house training will be provided. The applicant must have a good general education, good keyboard skills and be proficient in standard Microsoft Office computer software. The applicant must also be a good time keeper, be willing to learn new skills and undertake tasks accurately and in a timely fashion.
The successful candidate will be required to undergo a PVG Scheme Disclosure Scotland check.
Any candidate who has lived/worked overseas for more than 12 months in the preceding 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.
