CLINICAL RESEARCH FELLOW

Early Phase Clinical Trials (Cancer) & Experimental Cancer Medicine

Main Duties

The role offers an exciting opportunity to increase research capacity and deliver innovative early phase cancer clinical trials and translational medicine.

The post will be based at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, Glasgow, and the post-holder will be a co-investigator, under consultant oversight, on a portfolio of academically and commercially sponsored experimental drug trials as well as associated translational clinical research studies, with a particular focus on precision medicine as applied to experimental medicine.

The post-holder will work primarily alongside the early phase trials team and may include tumour-specific early phase trials led by other investigators in the Centre. The post holder will be involved in managing all aspects of trial patients, across a diverse range of solid tumours, through new patient consultation, consent & screening patients & reviewing patients at follow-up appointments.

The Fellow will be expected to attend the phase I team meetings for review of on-going and pending studies and patient allocation meeting for specific trials, to review new patient referrals, and to review patients who are on treatment in studies for which they are a co-investigator.

The Fellow’s responsibilities will include participation in regular (weekly or bi-weekly) safety review committee & dose decision teleconferences with other national and international investigator sites and study sponsors, and data review and investigator support for the Clinical Trial Coordinators and research nurses.

The Fellow will be expected to attend the regular joint Glasgow – Edinburgh Molecular Tumour Board (early phase trials) and the National Molecular Tumour Board (ECMC – TARGET National Trial).

The successful candidate will be able to gain experience in a broad range of experimental cancer medicine studies that may include administration of intra-tumoral novel immunotherapeutics; precision medicine; cellular therapies; clinical trial development, set-up, and delivery; and biomarker development as applied to clinical trials in collaboration with the Translational Pharmacology Laboratory and CR-UK Centre for Drug Development Glasgow Biomarkers Hub

Person Specification

This post is suitable for a Medical or Clinical Oncology Specialist Registrar (or equivalent if from outside of the UK) who holds a National Training Number, or who has completed specialist training, and wishes to gain additional sub-speciality training and experience in clinical trials and / or experimental medicine. Candidates who do not hold a National Training Number (or equivalent) but who have demonstrated a commitment to training in Medical or Clinical Oncology will also be considered.

Successful applicants will be encouraged to attend the ECMC Junior Investigator Network Group annual training meeting and the Methods in Clinical Cancer Research (MCCR) workshop and to present their work at national and international meetings.

This is a fixed-term post for 1 year. The salary will be on the NHS scale in line with appropriate clinical experience.

Current cancer research in Glasgow spans basic cancer biology, translational, and clinical research programmes, underpinned by infrastructure support that includes the Glasgow Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre, the CR-UK Glasgow Clinical Trials Unit, and the Scottish Cancer Research Network that are the conduits to clinical evaluation of our basic and translational research programmes. Education and training of the next generation of clinical researchers is a major priority with a TRACC (Train and Retain Academic Cancer Clinicians) Programme, funded by CR-UK, awarded jointly to Glasgow and Edinburgh. The CR-UK Scotland Centre is the focal point of interactions between the CR-UK Beatson Institute, the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, and NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde.
